School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 4-6 If one picture is truly worth 1000 words, then this generously illustrated photo essay is worth about 63,000 words! Further enhancing the book's value is its text, which clearly and succinctly directs readers through the production of one day's edition of the New York Daily News . The focus is on the newspaper's coverage of one story: Macy's Annual Thanksgiving Day Parade. The 63 black-and-white photos which follow this story's progress thoughout the book not only illustrate the accompanying text but amplify andas necessaryexplicate it, as well. The best pictures are those of the Daily News staff at work. Less successful are those showing the machines necessary to produce the newspaper, perhaps because many are either as featureless as a cement wall or so complex as to defy visual comprehension. The text takes over at such points, however, and does a generally heroic job of explaining the mind-boggling complexities at hand. While other books about newspapers are available, none is so up-to-the-minute, so production specific and so handsomely illustrated as Hot Off the Press! Michael Cart, Beverly Hills Public Library
