Overview

With the grace and style of a souped-up Seville -- and published to coincide with the annual race extravaganza at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah -- Hot Rod captures the American obsession with speed, thrills, and cars in this unparalleled collection of photographs. From the chop shops of East Bakersfield to the drag strips and deserts of California and Utah, David Perry's photographs expose the underbelly of the hot rod obsession. Greasers, gearheads, dragstrip beatniks, rockabilly queens, and hopped-up machines of all kinds are featured in this evocative tribute. Barry Gifford, best-selling author of Wild at Heart, adds an original novelette about Danny and his paramour, Yolanda, in a tale of Airstreams and Lucky Strikes that captures perfectly the rebellious spirit of the images.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
David Perry's extraordinary vision allows him to keep his eyes on much more than the road. His pictures remind me of those times I've walked into the wrong bar, realized it, but said,'What the hell,' and ordered a beer and asked a strange woman to dance anyway. Barry Gifford
VOYA - Randy Brough
Eighty cool sepia photographs of fast cars and the folks who build them, race them, or simply look fine leaning against them. A NASCAR album? No. This intriguing collection captures the cult of the hot rod, from the opening shot of Sneaky Pete's chop shop in East Bakersfield, California, to the closing image of a tarpaulin-covered roadster looking desolate somewhere on the Bonneville Salt Flats of Utah. In between are pictures of speed racers, drag cars, and souped-up automobiles of all kinds. And lots of pictures of gearheads, greasers, dollies, and fans. Tattoos, beards, shades, cigarettes, smiles. Many images are evocative of another time-when James Dean prowled the silver screen-but, in fact, were taken recently, testament to the timeless nature of the hot rod obsession as it seems to thrive on the frontiers of California, Utah, and probably elsewhere in America. The vignette by Gifford, Romantica, flaunts a hip edginess that is better suggested by the pictures, and adds very little to the photographer's unique vision. A resonant glimpse of a fascinating culture. Illus. Photos. VOYA Codes: 4Q 2P S (Better than most, marred only by occasional lapses, For the YA with a special interest in the subject, Senior High-defined as grades 10 to 12).
