Patrick SomervilleBecker's technical expertise and natural storytelling gifts are difficult to deny, as is his admirably muted sense of the absurd. His last book, the collection Black Elvis, won the 2008 Flannery O’Connor Award, and his meticulous scene-setting, bright dialogue and knack for pushing tense situations farther than you think he'll dare all translate well into the longer form. A hard-to-swallow coincidence is the book's one misstep, but the moody tone and great characters make such a small hiccup irrelevant. The other stuff's just too good. Of all the reasons to be excited about Hot Springs, though, the book's strange and fresh treatment of love itself is the best.
