Overview

Appealing to boys and girls alike, this beguiling adventure explores classic fantasy themes from a unique young heroine’s perspective. Nine-year-old Emma loses everything she has in a fearsome storm and finds herself alone in the wilderness of the Dunes—an area desolate since the mysterious disappearance of a resort known as the Grand Wenlocke. Finding a friend in Winston, the ghostly bellboy who wanders the Dunes, Emma learns that it has been more than 100 years since the hotel with an unsavory reputation vanished; but, unbeknownst to either of them, the long slumbering resort has just begun to stir. Allying herself with a motley crew of companions—the ghost bellboy, a kindhearted cook, a pirate with a heart of gold, and the imperious young heir to the Wenlocke fortune—Emma soon learns that things are not always as lost as they seem, especially if you have a brave heart and good friends.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Baker's (the Company series) first book for children introduces a young heroine named Emma, who finds herself on the Dunes after an unspecified disaster. Her apparent solitude is an illusion: the Dunes are home to the lost Grand Wenlocke, the most luxurious hotel in the world, as well as the ghost of dutiful Bell Captain Winston Oliver Courtland. The hotel is uncovered by conveniently timed winds and in short order the orphan and ghost are joined by cook Mrs. Beet, tugboat pirate Captain Doubloon and fellow orphan Masterman Wenlocke. The five form an ad-hoc family and begin operating the hotel once more. At the outset, the omniscient narrator assures readers that Emma has the required "cleverness and bravery" to tackle an adventure, but the book offers scant opportunities for Emma to demonstrate this. The tragedy that maroons Emma is deliberately vague, Doubloon is amiable, Masterman proves reasonable and the servants are properly submissive. The element of danger introduced by the arrival of Masterman's conniving guardian seems perfunctory. Although skillfully written, the book is undermined by a lack of tension. Ages 9-12.

If you like slightly old-fashioned ... with brave girls overcoming calamity ... .you will probably like The Hotel Under the Sand a lot.
Dallas News

Ms. Baker is the best thing to happen to modern science fiction since Connie Willis or Dan Simmons. She mixes adventure, history and societal concerns in just the right amount, creating an action-packed but thoughtful read.

Denver Post
Charming . . . Baker's first book for younger readers is a delight.
Fantasy Book Critic
I just wanted more! Hotel Under the Sand is one of those books that I truly believe could appeal to both kids and adults.
Library Journal

Combines historical detail and fast-paced action with a good dose of ironic wit and a dollop of bittersweet romance. Most libraries should add this to their sf collections for series fans.

Locus
There are few books that I immediately want to press into the hands of other readers the instant I turn the last page. My copy of Hotel will be one that I hand to my daughter in a few years. First, however, I'm going to force it on everybody I know.
VOYA
Although Baker is an established author of science fiction and fantasy for adults, this novel is written so naturally that it is difficult to believe it is her debut for younger readers.
Wired.com

It's exciting to come upon a book that serves not only as a great story to share with your kids, but one that has some undeniably unusual—and geeky—features. So, here are five particularly good reasons to read The Hotel under the Sand with your kids this summer.

VOYA
Although Baker is an established author of science fiction and fantasy for adults, this novel is written so naturally that it is difficult to believe it is her debut for younger readers. The story begins when Emma is washed away in a terrible storm that Baker makes explicitly clear could be literal or metaphorical. Emma is resilient in any case and before long befriends the ghost of a bellhop, who tells of the magnificent timeless hotel buried in the sands beneath them. Eventually the pair welcomes a cook, a sailor, and the hotel owner's last descendent, and adventures ensue. The book's first half is particularly charming, with enchanting descriptions as Emma explores her new world. Once the sailor arrives, the group undertakes a scavenger hunt in which the clues are solved rather easily and quickly, but they create a sort of steampunk sensibility, with odd mechanical contraptions that produce illusions in addition to the "real" magic that eventually surfaces. Law provides enough interior illustrations to delight younger readers but not so many that teens will find the book too babyish. Finally, although the book occasionally evokes shades of Eleanor Cameron's The Wonderful Flight to the Mushroom Planet (1954) or Odo Hirsch's Bartlett and the Ice Voyage (1999), it is in no way derivative, and in fact feels refreshingly original. Reviewer: Amy Sisson
Children's Literature
Emma is a survivor. She has survived a terrible storm of unspecified type and arrived at an unusual, sand-covered place. She is alone—but not for long. Soon, she makes the acquaintance of Bell Captain Winston Oliver Courtland. A ghost who lost his life in a terrible storm, he is all that seems to be left of a magical, time-stopping hotel that was completely buried during that epic tempest 100 years ago. But he is not the only unusual character to populate the pages of Kage Baker's fascinating fantasy. There is Mrs. Beet, the hotel housekeeper who survived the storm because she was protected by the hotel's time-altering magic. There is Captain Doubloon, who is an engaging and sneaky pirate-in-denial. There is Masterman Wenlocke, the descendant of the magician-scientist-inventor who designed and built the magical hotel. Finally, there is the host of magical hotel guests who come to stay when they hear about the hotel's opening. Part mystery, part survival account, part adventure tale, part homecoming story, and all the most fantastic of fantasies, Kage Baker's novel is a delight from page one. As a survival tale, it is an inspiration, but this book is far from didactic. Emma is—and her fellow comrades are—lucky to have been crafted by the imagination of a very gifted storyteller. How amazing to read a classic when it is written.

I have been reading for pleasure for more than fifty years now. I have read all of Ms. Baker's adult fantasy and science fiction, and was delighted to see that she had written a story for children as well. I would strongly recommend that anyone with a love of whimsy and enchantment jump down this rabbit hole at the first opportunity. The world can be a terrifying place for children, and this story deals with some of those frightening realities. With love, friendship, and courage, we try to find our way to a safe home, and this story is a wondrous signpost along that road. Adventures are undertaken and loyalties pledged, lessons both large and small are learned, all the while enjoying a great story. It makes me a little sad that I don't have a little one at home right now. I'll be recommending this to all of the teachers at my elementary school. Share this with all the families you know!
