    Useful but one major drawback

This book has many positive attributes that make it a useful tool: small light weight format, good organization, quality designs, and excellent quality photography as one would expect from House Beautiful. But the limitations of color photography and printing ink can be vary VARY deceptive when it comes to color. I'm a professional interior designer so I am, admittedly, extremely sensitive to color and have accute color perception. I have all of the major paint manufacturer's fan decks in my office so it is easy for me to varify the actual representation of the colors as they appear in the book. Most of the swatches in the book do not even come close to the actual color. So of what use is this color book if the colors are not true as printed? I think this book can stimulate thinking about color, color combinations, and uses of specific colors that one might not have considered before. So as always, one must paint samples to try out the color in a particular situation, to view the color under the specific lighting conditions and surroundings before a choice is made. Overall, this book is a good value for the price.

Great help for picking paint colors

I just love this book. I have been getting House Beautiful magazine for several years and love it. This is a concise listing of lots of great paint colors. I first took it out of the library and then decided I just had to have it for good. It does a great job of categorizing colors by rooms, color groups and occasion (Soothing Neutrals, Colors For Coziness, etc.).For each color swatch, a designer gives a wonderful description, which really helps you to better understand how that color will work. For example: Benjamin Moore Papaya 957: "The most enduring color I've found looks like homemade vanilla ice cream with a little caramel in it..." Ben Moore Man on the Moon : "As the day wanes, it gets deeper and really starts to glow once the lights are turned on. Who doesn't need a little moonflower in their life?" Sherwin Williams Honied White: "It looks like white with sunlight in it...", Shewin Williams Ivoire: "This is a scrumptious color that reminds me of my favorite patisserie in Paris..." This book will send you running, not walking, to your nearest paint store for some samples. It is heavy on Benjamin Moore colors (which are wonderful) but also includes many other brands such as Farrow & Ball and Shewin Williams. A must have for anyone choosing paint colors or wondering how to set a mood in a room.

    more from this reviewer

Good resource for colors & interesting comments from various designers.

I noticed that many of the colors were from Benjamin Moore (which I didn't mind as I'm probably going to be using that brand paint). However, I did notice that a couple of the colors were quite off from the paint chips that I picked up from the BM paint store.

    very helpful

This book was very helpful in terms that it can be very overwhelming choosing the right paint color. I am painting three bedrooms and wanted them to flow nicely and this helped to choose coordinating paint hues. What I would have liked is some more help on what colors go together within each room. Good book to have in your home improvement library.

Terrific resource for help with choosing paint color!

I love this little book. It's a terrific resource when thinking about what color paint to use in a space. The decorators' experience with these colors is most valuable. The only flaw with this book is that the colors are not true and you really need to use the paint manufacturers' fan decks/color chips to check the colors.

Very simple and to the point!

I thought this was just want I needed. I just wasnted some ideas and maybe a variety of colors to pick from and this book did just that. When getting books to assist with design and style..sometimes I feel overwhelmed with the information and it just confuses me further. This really was basic and easy to read...I still kind of just browse through it to see if any others things kind of just jump up at me.

What a Great Idea for a Book on Paint Color

One of my favorite articles in House Beautiful magazine features designers talking about their favorite paint colors.  This little paperback is a collection of these articles in an easy to follow format, with the paint colors catalogued in the backto make it easy to find a particular color quickly.  It's a great little reference book, easy to store, and inexpensive enough to give to lots of friends.
