Overview

No matter what size one's home, there is always a need for more storage space. We keep accumulating, and need room to accommodate beautiful things as well as everyday items. House Beautiful Storage comes to the rescue, with dozens of creative ways to bring our possessions under control, creating order out of chaos. Whether the need is for the display of a prized collection or a hideaway for necessities, there are elegant and clever ways to make use of space and items that one already has -- for example, overhead or under-bed areas, niches, furniture that does double duty. The sensible factor (bedside storage) is addressed, too, as is architectural detail (handsome cabinetry, built-ins).

Specific ideas for kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, and garden storage are included, with stylish solutions for showing off collectibles or hiding clutter. In the kitchen, for example, House Beautiful offers strategies that include open and closed shelves, hanging utensils from the ceiling, and baskets for overhead storage. In bedroom and bath, fabric below the sink, a bench with shelves underneath, or a chest atop a bureau are some of the imaginative storage ideas presented. And there are the happy surprises that a reader might never have thought of: objects that store (hat boxes, baskets, trunks)
.

House Beautiful shows the reader how to keep it all -- with panache.

Editorial Reviews

Chicago Tribune
Storage is a subject close to just about everybody's heart. There never seems to be enough of it. With that truth in mind, the editors of House Beautiful have crafted a picture book that shows how to pack, squeeze and eke out all of the space possible from a home's existing architecture and furniture. This mid-scale hardcover is loaded with color photos, and reads easily with chapters organized by room.
Cincinnati Enquirer
Most interior design books and magazines offer two solutions for the storage dilemma. Arrange your dishes or pots or sweaters artistically on open shelves for the world to see or hide everything behind the doors of an antique armoire or custom-built cabinetry.

At first glance, the photographs in House Beautiful Storage seem to be more of the same. But, if you look again, there are ideas many of us can use:

* Line cookbooks on a kitchen counter for added color, and a bit of sophistication.

*

* Use a floor-length table skirt to hide sundry things (CDs, books, shoes)

*

* Hang inexpensive fabric across a corner or an alcove for an instant closet.

Publisher's Weekly
An often scanted aspect of daily living receives serious attention in House Beautiful Storage as the editors of House Beautiful, using text by Sally Clark (Colors, Slipcovers) show how beautifully one might store all sorts of clutter -- with the help of a decorator and without budget concerns. Nonetheless, many of the lavishly illustrated, clearly described and often inventive ideas for storage can be translated into reality for the cost-conscious as well. Practical suggestions for every room in the home including stacking old trunks and building bookshelves onto the front of a closed door. Delicious to pore through, this dream decorating book of ideal home spaces offers plenty of valuable style cues to less advantaged readers.
Library Journal
With more appliances in the kitchen, the increase in home entertainment centers and offices, and the popularity of collecting, no wonder there is a shortage of space in homes today. These books provide solutions for where to fit more things without having to add a room. Better Homes and Gardens, with photographs and captions, points out 301 ideas for creative storage alternatives in every room of the house. House Beautiful looks at the high-end of storage with polished, professionally styled interiors and their storage solutions. Better Homes and Gardens is recommended for public libraries because the explanations are more accessible to the amateur; however, professional and design school collections will want the House Beautiful book as well.
