Overview

A behind-the-scenes look at Wall Street's top banker

Following the eleventh-hour rescue of Bear Stearns by JP Morgan, Jamie Dimon's profile reached stratospheric levels. And while the deals and decisions he's made have usually turned out to be the right ones, his journey to the top of the financial world has been anything but easy.

Now, in The House of Dimon, former business journalist Patricia Crisafulli goes behind the scenes to recount the amazing events that have shaped Dimon's career, from his rise to prominence as Sandy Weill's protégé at Citigroup to the drama surrounding his purchase of Bear Stearns and Washington Mutual. Each step of the way, this engaging book provides insider accounts of how Dimon successfully acquired and integrated companies, created efficiencies, and grew bottom-line results as the consummate hands-on manager.

  • Includes interviews with Dimon himself, Sandy Weill, and colleagues who've known Dimon over the course of his career
  • Shows how Dimon's management style and talent for taking calculated risks have allowed him to excel where many others have failed
  • Places Dimon in the context of contemporary Wall Street, an environment that has destroyed several top CEOs

During one of the most difficult and tumultuous periods in Wall Street history, Jamie Dimon has survived and thrived. The House of Dimon reveals how he's done it and explores what lies ahead for Dimon, as he attempts to grow JPMorgan in the face of the unrelenting pressures of Wall Street.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
JP Morgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon has been called everything from a "whiz kid" and "Wall Street's biggest player" to "a titan and builder" to "cluelessly arrogant." His up-again-down-again ride to the top inspired New York mayor Michael Bloomberg to compare him to a Shakespearean hero; others have been more enthralled by his hands-on management style and talent spotting. Patricia Crisafulli sorts it out in a book that will allow readers to fantasize about their own Walter Mitty corporate careers.
From the Publisher
"It is easy to read and brings together events in the financial markets over the past 40 years that are helpful to review and reflect upon" (Seeking Alpha)

"Crisafulli goes behind the scenes to recount the amazing events that have shaped Dimon's career" (CEO Middle East, April 2009)

"…anyone who reads Ms. Crisafulli’s fiduciary love letter will take away some valuable lessons in running a bank—or, for that matter, a business." (The Wall Street Journal, April 10, 2009)

    I Also Recommend:

    The Empty House

I went into The House of Dimon: How JP Morgan's Jamie Dimon Rose to the Top of the Financial World by Patricia Crisafulli feeling pretty confident based on the reviews that this would be a true biography of Dimon almost to the point of it being an auto-biography because of the unfettered access she had to both Dimon and people around him.

Instead what the reader finds is at best what one could have read in any of the various news articles on Dimon (i.e.: nothing new).

Crisafulli jumps straight to Dimons time spent at Harvard without stopping to develop more where he grew up, his experiences of childhood, undergraduate before even getting to Harvard for graduate school. Even then Crisafulli lightly glosses over his time there before plunging headlong into his professional career which in her telling consisted of seemingly a short time-period before his eventual exile from Citi and then assuming the reins at JPMorgan Chase.

One could get more from the autobiography of Sandy Weil (The Real Deal: My Life in Business and Philanthropy) on Dimon's early life, his time at Citi and then his later exile then one could ever get from Crisafulli telling of the tale. Further, she relies on telling how the skills and experiences he gained early in life prepared him for saving the banking industry ad nausea rather then just mentioning it when the actual action occurs.

With a short-run through his younger year, a passing glance at his early career and then a plunge head long into saving the banking industry Crisafulli has built less of a House of Dimon and more of an Empty House.

Jamie Dimon deserves a better book

Jamie Dimon is clearly the leading banker of his generation. His rise and fall and rise story is a fascinating one, and he deserves a terrific book that tells his story. This is not it. It's almost all done from secondary sources, except for a half dozen interview subjects who crop up on most pages, and the writing is pedestrian. Like all Wiley books, there is no editing at all, so that the erstwhile CEO of Wamu, Kerry Killinger, can repeatedly be called "Killington," as if he were not one of modern bankings leading flim-flam men at all, but a ski resort in Vermont. Skip it.
