Overview

Alivia’s father left her a letter before he died, begging her to stay away from the King and the Royals. But it was a plea made in vain. She never could have run from this life, not when she might be Cyrus’ resurrected queen. The King has arrived in Silent Bend and with him, he brought the end to Alivia’s mortal life.

Uncontrollable bloodlust and an ever-shifting world rule her nights now. These twisted politics are deadly enough, but now her heart is the newest battleground. There’s no hiding from the one who hates everything she was born to, a spy who embraces everything she’s become, and a King who vies for someone she may soon remember.

The games have begun. The House of Conrath is growing. Blood will be shed, the bodies will fall. Alliances will be tested and old enemies look like harmless children compared to the new ones rising from the shadows.

****SPOILERS FOR HOUSE OF PAWNS (BOOK 2) INCLUDED**** I was granted the distinct honor of reading a copy of House of Kings well before release, courtesy of author extraordinaire, Keary Taylor. House of Pawns had left Alivia dying a mortal death and us all wondering just what was in store for her in her new life. It also left us with so many questions regarding her involvement with not just Ian and King Cyrus, but the spy, Raheem, as well. While House of Pawns wasn't the worst cliffhanger I had ever experienced, I had been eagerly anticipating the publication of House of Royals. House of Kings, once again, thrust us right back in the middle of everything going on in Silent Bend. There was no warm up, no hesitancy. It was much the same with King Cyrus' consideration with Alivia and adjusting to her new normal. She was tossed right in the deep end, and she had to figure out how to sink or swim. The King's 'games' were alluded to in House of Pawns, and there was some insight into just how sadistic he might be. Any preconceived notions we had of him were nothing compared to actually seeing him, and his games, in action, though. Cyrus spared no consideration for anyone, friend, foe, or trusted comrade. He was equally harsh with every player. Never have I seen someone be so nonchalant while carrying out the horrors he did. It made him all the more frightening, being so regal and composed while simultaneously acting incredibly vicious and underhanded. It was a thing to behold. There were moments when Alivia, and the choices she made, were just as frightening as the King. Her ability to rise above and beyond every challenge the King through at her was fascinating. Not many, if any, would have been able to hold their own in such stressful situations, but Alivia did. Further showing just how strong she is. The things she had been through, and continued to experience were awful; she was able to rise above her circumstances and do everything she could to ensure the safety of her House. I'm still in awe of Alivia, leader of the House of Conrath. As has been the case with each book of the House of Royals series, this book was full of revelations, secrets, twists, and the unexpected. Each one weaving seamlessly into the next; leaving us with an intricately woven tapestry of deception, pain, fear, and most importantly, hope. Keary Taylor did not disappoint in House of Kings. She is a masterful storyteller; she paints such a vivid world with her words. As with every other book of hers I've read, I feel as if I am standing right next to each character. Like I can feel the snow crunch beneath my feet. Like I can feel the silk of a dress beneath my fingers. An author who can put you that far into a story is one that can not be missed.
