Overview

"A funny and unique debut." (Publishers Weekly).

Sebastian Prendergast lives with his eccentric grandmother in a geodesic dome. His homeschooling has taught him much-but he's learned little about girls, junk food, or loud, angry music.

Then fate casts Sebastian out of the dome, and he finds a different kind of tutor in Jared Whitcomb: a chain-smoking sixteen-year-old heart transplant recipient who teaches him the ways of rebellion. Together they form a punk band and plan to take the local church talent show by storm. But when his grandmother calls him back to the futurist life she has planned for him, he must decide whether to answer the call-or start a future of his own.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
Sebastian Prendergast is no ordinary teenager. Housed in a geodesic dome, he lives in near isolation, homeschooled by his grandmother, a disciple of architect and futurist R. Buckminster Fuller. Sebastian is expected to fulfill his destiny (saving the planet), yet his days are spent giving tours of the dome, working in the gift shop, and studying. He has never consumed processed foods, set foot in a church, played a guitar, or had a friend. Never, that is, until the day his grandmother suffers a stroke and the fabric of his life unravels.

Sebastian happens upon the Whitcombs, a family in crisis who welcomes Sebastian and offers him a friendship he hasn't experienced before.

They form an uneasy unit, but it's one that bands together when the going gets tough. As Sebastian processes his newfound life, he begins — for the first time — to think for himself. He confronts the principles on which he's been raised, and comes to the conclusion that well-meaning, otherwise good people may be flawed.

A charming tale of what happens when a thoughtful, sheltered kid opens his eyes to the real world for the very first time, The House of Tomorrow captures the wonder of Sebastian's first sip of grape-flavored punch, his first glimpse of a near-naked girl, and his first angry guitar riff with all the delight that such seminal events hold.

Publishers Weekly
Sebastian Prendergast, the teenage narrator of Bognanni's funny and unique debut, lives in Iowa's first geodesic dome with his grandmother, a devout follower of futurist philosopher Buckminster R. Fuller. But when Nana has a stroke, Sebastian is thrown together with Janice and teenageJared Whitcomb, who were touring the home when Nana was stricken. Soon, Sebastian and Jared form an unlikely bond via the great teenage tradition of punk rock, starting their own band despite the objections of everyone around them and Sebastian's lack of musical ability (holding a guitar for the first time, Jared says, “Strum,” and Sebastian asks, “What do you mean?”). And while Jared succeeds to some degree in socializing Sebastian—teaching him about music, smoking, and curse words—Sebastian ends up getting more than he bargained for when the two get caught up in Whitcomb family drama. The boys here don't come of age—girls are just beginning to exist and lifelong struggles are only taking root—but their connection is an honest, noisy, and raucous look at friendship and how loud music can make almost everything better. (Mar.)
Publishers Weekly
Sixteen-year-old Sebastian Prendergast has grown up isolated, homeschooled, and, in of all places, a geodesic dome in Iowa with his grandmother, a fervent Buckminster Fuller fan. Her sudden illness brings Sebastian together with his first friend ever. Jarod Whitcomb is a moody, punk music fan who's known something of loneliness, too, and the two misfits form a punk band of their own. Bognanni's characters are well drawn and sympathetic; his story is an affectionate and sly portrayal of adolescent angst and a paean to punk—and it just gets better in Lloyd James's hands. The dialogue becomes laugh-out-loud funny and James's youthful voice keeps Sebastian's first-person narrative sounding genuine. A Putnam hardcover (Reviews, Nov. 16). (Mar.)

I immediately fell in love with this book.

Funny and touching, The House of Tomorrow is not only a good read, but it's also something different that you might not have seen before. I for one am extremely tired of every teen book out being about vampires. Anyway, the thing that immeadiately hooked me in was the situation the main character, Sebastian, was in. He had a totally different lifestyle then everyone else, and while it was strange, it was also very thought provoking. I also loved how it combined old school punk into the storyline. I'm a sucker for books that incorporate the history of punk music, so it was interesting to see how important it was in Sebastian and Jared's lives. The overall plot and storyline was good as well, & you could connect with at least one of the characters in the story.
So, if you're looking for something a little different, or maybe just a good read, I would most definitely give this book a read.

    Wonderful Escapist Fiction

While the characters may seem flat, it's Bognanni's wonderfully fresh writing style that breathes life into this work. The plot, sheltered teenage boy thrust into the "real world" and overwhelmed, is not by any means new, but is a plot that manages to win me over every time as you see someone introduced to all the things you know and already understand. Bognanni's control of his world is strong and though those inhabiting it are not deep or fully reach their potential, the joy of this book is seeing them do what they were designed to do and that is experience the world and teach our hero Sebastian how best to do just that.

    Extremely basic.

I fell in love with the first chapter of this book. It showed originality, promise and diverse characters. However, as I read on I realized that the characters only had one or two defining traits about their personality. Those traits were obviously elementary and they were overused. You couldn't escape how similar every person was beyond that. They all stayed as simple as they were in the infancy of the first chapter. Not to mention that anybody who actually listens to punk rock would be insulted and know that certain events in this book were very poorly portrayed.

    Love this book!

I first saw this book on the shelf at my local Barnes & Noble. The cover immeadiately caught my eye and I read the first page and knew I had to have this book. It is amazing! The characters are complex and I felt a connection to them throughout the book. This story is told in such a cool perspective. If you love punk rock music and love reading I would totally recommend this book. I read this book in just a couple days and I could barely put it down. Bognanni really captures the essence of being a teenager and having big dreams.

I have been waiting a long time for a book like "The House of Tomorrow" and was elated when I found it at B&N. However, when I took it home and read it, I was a bit disappointed.

While the premise of this story sounded new and exciting, Bognanni fails to deliver. What could have been a fresh outlook on a teenager's life, turned into a cliche tale of boy-meets-girl, girl-hates-boy, boy-wins-girl's-heart, boy-breaks-girl's-heart.
