Publishers Weekly

In this engaging novel from Southern novelist White (The Memory of Water), buttoned-up real estate agent Melanie Middleton, lover of order and all things modern, inherits an old house in Charleston, S.C., from a virtual stranger. Melanie can't help seeing the house as a big white elephant, especially regarding the terms; according to the will, Melanie's required to live in the house for a year, restoring it to its former glory, before she can sell so much as a piece of china. But as the house draws the attention (and ulterior motives) of a colorful group of locals, particularly GQ-handsome journalist Jack Trenholm, Melanie finds she has plenty of volunteers to help out. White skillfully balances her tale at the meeting point of romance, mystery and ghost story. The supernatural elements are not played for scares, but instead refine and reveal Melanie's true character; Melanie and Jack flirt with sparkling, snarky energy, but White also digs deeper, giving Melanie a tragic past that's handled with compassion and realism. A fun and satisfying read, this series kickoff should hook a wide audience. (Nov.)

Meet the Author

After playing hooky one day in the seventh grade to read Gone With the Wind, Karen White knew she wanted to be a writer—or become Scarlett O'Hara. In spite of these aspirations, Karen pursued a degree in business and graduated cum laude with a BS in Management from Tulane University. Ten years later, after leaving the business world, she fulfilled her dream of becoming a writer and wrote her first book. In the Shadow of the Moon was published in August, 2000. This book was nominated for the prestigious RITA award in 2001 in two separate categories. Her books have since been nominated for numerous national contests including another RITA, the Georgia Author of the Year Award and in 2008 won the National Readers’ Choice Award for Learning to Breathe.

Karen currently writes what she refers to as ‘grit lit’—southern women’s fiction—and has recently expanded her horizons into writing a mystery series set in Charleston. Her tenth novel, The Lost Hours, will be released in trade paperback by New American Library, a division of Penguin Publishing Group, in April 2009.

Karen hails from a long line of Southerners but spent most of her growing up years in London, England and is a graduate of the American School in London. She currently lives near Atlanta, Georgia with her husband and two teenaged children, and a spoiled Havanese dog (who appears in several of her books), Quincy. When not writing, she spends her time reading, singing, playing piano, chauffeuring children and avoiding cooking.

I adore books about the South! I thought that The House on Tradd Street was a fresh look at a city that many have written about and I found the characters charming and endearing. The story about family in this book pulls at your heart...and if you are a sucker for a southern ghost story you will enjoy this one. A great read!!

Melanie Middleton inherits an old historic home on Tradd Street. Jack Trenholm is a writer. He suspects there is treasure hidden in the house. He volunteers to assist Melanie in the remodeling/restoring effort in hopes of doing a little treasure hunting. He soon falls in love with Melanie. The old house is haunted and one particular spirit is very unhappy with all the treasure hunting.
Karen White impressed me in her first book, The Memory of Water. She just keeps getting better! The House On Tradd Street is a great read. Readers will enjoy the romance between Melanie and Jack. The flirtation is high energy. The characters are multi-dimensional and eccentric. Even the ghosts have quirky personalities. This is not your typical ghost story; it is not horror or spooky. This story has great depth. Romance, mystery, paranormal, and a little humor all combine to make The House On Tradd Street a book that you do not want to miss.

Realtor, Melanie, loves that her professional success allows her the luxury to live the free single life and have full control of her life. A past client left her a huge old mansion in Charleston, South Carolina and all she had to do was live in it for a year. The mystery of Louisa's disappearance is one of the reasons Melanie agreed to take the house. A few ghosts come in handy in this wonderful mystery in search of some answers. Jack Trenhold, a reporter, suspects there is hidden treasure hidden in the house and offers to help Melanie fix up the house and thus the time to fall in love. A wonderful, exciting read!!

Loved it! It takes an independent career woman who has a gift for seeing ghosts and knocks her off her feet with a dying man's wish to leave her his house with the hopes of clearing his family name. Very good read with a few twists along the way!

I've been a big fan of Karen White since reading "The Color of Light". All of her books have entertained me but this one is definitely by far,is her best. I adore mysteries and Tradd Street gives you a classic. You meet Melanie and Jack and know from the beginning they have instant Chemistry.
This book is an enjoyable ride from start to finish. I can hardly wait for the sequel and hope that there are many Melanie and Jack adventures in the future.
If you love Southern themed books of love, mystery, family and friendship, you'll love Karen White's books.

Loved this book and can not wait for the next in the series due out late in 2009. I hope the series goes past more than just 2 books! Really great read! I could hardly put it down. It has everything! I have been looking for a book like this for a long time. It has mystery, ghosts, romance, history,... I wish I could find more like it!

Ghost stories are not my usual choice, but this novel brings in the history and architecture of Charleston, making me feel as if I am there. I started to read it before my visit, but now that I have walked on Tradd Street, King Street and the historical area, it means so much more. The author has done a good job of creating the scene and feeling of Charleston. It is a nice story that exposes us to the background, gardens, architecture, history and people of the area. I enjoyed it and will recommend to some of my friends. Not a real mystery story (or I probably wouldn't have chose it to begin with!)

If you enjoy a book that will keep you engaged, then this is the book for you. It's a mystery and a ghost story rolled into one. With a bit of romance for good measure. I really enjoyed it and Im looking forward to reading the next book Karen White is going to write involving the two main characters. It's due out in November 2009; I only wish I had the Tital of it!

If you're not a believer in ghosts, you'll change your mind after you read Karen's latest best seller contender. The House on Tradd Street has everything you look for in a great read. Wonderfully portrayed characters who are so multifaceted they literally jump off the pages. A story that is so entertaining that you can't stop turning pages until it's done. And last but not least the writing is first class.
No one tells a story like Karen White and if you've read her before you'll know what I mean and if you haven't, well what are you waiting for.
As our story begins top real estate seller, Melanie Middleton has just inherited a run down Charleston mansion and you guessed it, it's haunted. In steps bestselling author and hunk Jack Trenholm who offers help to Melanie to restore the falling down house. Melanie has more to worry about than just a too handsome partner, she has family issues she doesn't want to deal with but finds impossible not to and secrets are being revealed and mysteries about the house and it's past occupants abound. And if that's not enough she has another beau that's vying for her attention. Now all she has to do is solve the mystery and stay alive and sane.

This is a story with a good mix of mystery, romance, history and even some ghosts. Karen White is a new author for me and I found her book to be a refreshing change from much of the cureent comtemporary fiction I have read lately (thriller, terrorist behind the bad guy, etc.).

I discovered this book while surfing B&N.com. It sounded interesting, but I have to say that sometimes when I am reading mysteries that are as descriptive as this one, they plot often get lost in all of the detail of the story and you cant make heads from tails. That was not the case with this book. I was immediatly pulled in from page one and would find myself still reading at 2 am. The chemistry between Jack and Melanie is delicious, and the mysteries surrounding the house and Melanie's psychic abilities make for a wonderful story. I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a good mystery to lose yourself in!

I really enjoyed this book. It had a little bit of everything- mystery, paranormal, romance, all in a great setting. I loved the house in the story and felt like I was there thanks to the author's great descriptions. The story takes many twists and turns and kept me guessing until the end. I can't wait to read the next book.

First book I have read by this author. It is very good, better than I thought it would be when I purchased it. The characters were interesting and well developed. The story line was different and engrossing.

A storyline with romance, mystery, Charleston area history and the supernatural are all wrapped into this book. Could not put it down once I started it. I read at least two books a week and this is one of my absolute favorites! I have passed this to everyone I know.

Good book for a cold winters or rainy day cause it is a one sitting for hours, can't put it down kind of a book! It will hook you from the first chapter.
