Overview

Very tasty post-bop outing led by Virginia-based drummer Jae Sinnett. All but one of the compositions are Sinnett originals, and he proves himself to be a fine writer, creating interesting, melodic music in a variety of styles and tempos. The opening title track is a direct rewrite of John Coltrane's "Cousin Mary" from Giant Steps (it's even in the same key), across which saxophonist Steve Wilson and pianist Cyrus Chestnut play some nice lines. "Night Kiss" and "Wayne" are lovely ballads, showing Sinnett's lyrical side. "Abdu's Fiesta" is a percussive Latin romp on which Chestnut gets an opportunity to roam over his keyboard with abandon. Although this is a session led by an accomplished drummer, Sinnett doesn't feel the need to show off too much, allowing his compositions and the quartet's ensemble work to do most of the musical talking for him. The only unaccompanied drum solo comes as the introduction to the lengthy "Steady as She Goes," an attractive multi-part piece that would not sound out of place on a Yellowjackets album like Dreamland or Blue Hats. House and Sinnett is a gem of a recording that places Jae Sinnett in the jazz big leagues.
