Introduction

First-timers expect the wild, wild West when they come to Houston, a Hollywood-inspired pastiche of dashing Stetson'ed cowboys, dusty longhorn steers, and ice-cold, long-neck beers. And sure enough, every February the city truly does look like a Lonesome Dove movie set. During the annual livestock show and rodeo, one of the largest in the world, Houstonians gleefully and completely "go Texan." Others seek, and find, the legendary big bucks of the "oil bidness" that built the city; a land of sleek limousines, bejeweled matrons, and jaw-dropping mansions, monuments to success, even excess.

But our Gulf Coast cityscape actually has more in common with the slow soul of the Deep South: Think antebellum estates fronting lazy bayous, spreading live oak trees draped in Spanish moss, and lush green lawns bordered every spring with brilliant azalea blooms. Greenbelts and parks beckon, and glorious spring and fall weather lures Houstonians outdoors in droves to jog and bike and sail, to attend theater and musical performances under the stars, and to linger late on moonlit dining patios and decks. Summers here are as sultry as can be, but when the entire city boasts polar-blast air-conditioning, who cares? Even the office workers of downtown's glittering skyscrapers bustle through miles of comfortably cool underground tunnels lined with shops and restaurants.

The Itineraries

Considering that Houston is now the nation's third-largest city, its four million greater metropolitan residents spread over some 75 miles north to south and again east to west, it's surprising that it's also one of this country's least-discovered destinations for lovers. Even our otherwise knowledgeable native Houstonian friends scoffed at the notion of a book full of local itineraries for romance. Shoot, it was a snap! We started with four-star hotels and luxurious resorts, added culinary thrills and glamorous shopping, and found dozens of getaways just perfect for lovers of luxury. We sought out elegant little bed-and-breakfasts in pretty, peaceful neighborhoods, explored the world-class museums and operatic companies nearby, and designed weekend escapes to satisfy the most demanding art devotees. And for adventure lovers, what treats are in store! You two can prowl offbeat art galleries and eccentric coffeehouses, gain admittance to avant-garde performances, and maybe spy an "art car" or two.

So our pages were already half-filled before leaving the city limits, or even straying far outside Houston's famous Loop 610, which geographically divides the inner city from the outer. Then we hit the road. Just north of town we found luxurious wooded resorts, quiet family farms, historical villages, and quaint shops to explore hand-in-hand. We went south to Clear Lake, which is neither clear nor a lake but a great venue for sailing, shopping, and dining. Stay southbound to revel in the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico, lapping the shores of Galveston Island: Only an hour's drive from Houston's central business district are sun-worshippers' beaches galore, lovingly restored Victorian homes, classic sailing ships, and horse-drawn carriages. To the northwest the green rolling hills of Brenham, Chappell Hill, and Round Top offer a serene, country getaway complete with bluebonnets, antique roses, and antiques stores, to say nothing of the "best ice cream in the country"; to the southwest, Brazos Bend State Park offers a chance to reacquaint yourselves with nature and each other, with a magnificent observatory for star-gazing.

Using This Book

Our itineraries are designed with a weekend's leisure in mind, most adventures starting on Friday afternoons and dallying through lazy Sundays. You can, of course, mix and match your romantic options as you see fit. You'll find great notions for a first-date evening or a day trip perfect for an anniversary surprise. Many of the neighborhoods we explore are quite close to one another, like the Museum District, Montrose, and West University, for example. Don't hesitate to match a romantic restaurant from one itinerary with love-nest lodgings from another. Although hotel and bed-and-breakfast prices can fluctuate seasonally, especially in summertime favorite resort areas like Galveston and Clear Lake, you'll be pleased to find that rates compare very favorably with other tourist destinations.
