K-Gr 4-The famous Alexander doll factory is featured in this appealing photo essay, which shows the complex process of making a doll and the skill and dedication required on the part of all involved. From designers to make-up artists, hair dressers, seamstresses, and shoemakers to technicians running the machines in the factory, it is a fascinating story that is delightfully told. The full-color photographs are excellent, especially those showing closeups of the hands of the workers as they ampulate tiny body parts and pieces of clothing. The vocabulary and personalized style make this a book to be appreciated by a wide audience.-Pamela K. Bomboy, Chesterfield County Public Schools, VA

Nowhere has Kuklin better demonstrated her facility with a camera. The wonderful pictures she's gathered here bring process and people together. The jacket photo, a fetching picture of a pretty doll's face, will be a spectacular draw for doll lovers. The clear, full-color photographs inside the book, which include many close-ups (a particularly arresting one is a double-page spread of dolls' eyes), are equally striking as they guide us through a factory to witness the dollmaking process--from the pen-and-paper design of the character to the tying of the costume's last perfect bow. Kuklin adds an attractively personal element to the text by naming each worker pictured and by including a few direct quotes. The book design is well thought out, with an eye-catching interplay of large and small photographs and enlarged type surrounded by plenty of pleasing white space. A book certain to enchant the doll lovers among us--adults as well as children.
