Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
A bold boy with unruly blond hair, mismatched shoes, and dirty overalls sets out to share his kisses with creatures big and small, funny and fluffy, scaly and stinky. As the boy meets these animals, his father questions whether they are kissable ("Do you like to kiss a bunny?"), occasionally supplying answers in rhyme ("Kiss a bunny? That is funny"). The puckering protagonist's kissing encounters become increasingly outlandish, beginning with dogs and cows, progressing to skunks and snakes, and eventually considering worms, toes, a mop, and a cactus ("Do you like to kiss a cactus?/ That would take a lot of practice"). Visually, the boy's father remains off-page until the final pages, when he is seen tucking his son into bed and making the essential point of the story: "There's nothing I would rather do/ than be someone who's kissed by you." Together with Woodruff's (the Lindy Blues series) bright and delicately outlined watercolor illustrations, debut author Tarpley's sweetly silly story is, like kissing, suitable for any time of day. Up to age 2. (June)
Children's Literature - JoAn Watson Martin
With a nod to Varsha Bajaj's How Many Kisses Do You Want Tonight, Todd Tarpley reminds young readers how important Dad is. Hurray for a Dad who recognizes the significance of connecting emotionally to his young child. This small boy enjoys kisses so much, that he makes an extended search for other ways to share his affection by kissing. He is fearless and eager to go on a kissing adventure. The toddler starts kissing acceptable, but startled victims: dogs, cats, and bunnies. But way down at the end of the kissing adventure he questions the wisdom of kissing cactus, worms, skunks, ducks, and snakes!?! The illustrations capture delightful expressions on surprised faces of those caught and kissed. Entranced by rhythmic rhyming text, most children will memorize the story and read it back to Dad. This is Tarpley's first picture book. He uses material close to home with two "huggable" sons. Final warning: P.S. Stop kissing mops. Reviewer: JoAn Watson Martin
School Library Journal
PreS—An unseen narrator asks a little boy, "Do you like to kiss a dog? Do you like to kiss a frog?" And so this rhyming list of potential animals, reptiles, birds, and insects begins. Each page shows the little boy gamely trying to kiss (or avoid kissing) creatures such as a skunk, snake, goose, and flea. At the end of the story, the father asks for his own kiss goodnight, completing the circle. Some of the rhymes are a little forced, but that will be covered up by the laughs from children envisioning themselves kissing these animals. The illustrations are sweet and humorous-readers can tell from the expression on the little boy's face whether or not he is inclined to kiss that animal. This book would be ideal as an individual lap-sit or storytime selection. Either way, readers will feel that it ended just right, with a kiss from Dad.—Susan E. Murray, Glendale Public Library, AZ
Kirkus Reviews
Readers join a little boy as he puckers up for some pretty unusual kisses. Dogs, frogs, cats, bats and all manner of farmyard animals are all recipients of this curious toddler's smooches. "Do you like to kiss a bunny? / Kiss a bunny? That is funny." From these rather harmless animals, he then goes on to consider toes, cacti, worms, mops and skunks. But at the end of the day, the most enthusiastic recipient of his kisses is his dad, who hugs and kisses him before tucking him in: "There's nothing I would rather do / Than be someone who's kissed by you." Tarpley's rolling verse reads aloud easily, and the text/illustration juxtapositions lend well to predictive reading. The absurdity of some of the kissing combinations will appeal to little ones. Woodruff's sweet watercolors depict an overall-clad toddler with muddy cheeks and an adorable smile. Pucker up-this one's sure to elicit kisses with every reading. (Picture book. 1-3)
