Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
"Words to Know" is the first section in this early reader and it is really a picture glossary of six words. All of the animals on the brightly colored cover share something in common. The glossary shows the stripes on the fish depicted on the cover. The text is interactive asking readers to describe the differences and similarities among the animals. Next spots on animals are introduced using a similar approach. The stripes and spots are visual differences. The next spread introduces plants and animals that share a tactile similarity. Then there is an amusing spread showing creatures that fly, but one of them really isn't built for flying and readers are asked to find it. The final activity will appeal to many young readers because they are asked to match up the dinosaurs and young children will soon have these polysyllabic names rolling off their tongues. The closing page contains plenty of information for adults including the objectives in reading, activities prior to reading, follow-up questions and a variety of activities and ways to extend the information presented. There is even a teachers' guide at www.crabtreebooks.com/teachersguides. Part of the "My World" series, this is a Guided Reading Level "D" title. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
