Grant Barrett wrinkled his nose as he shoved the pretty little redhead down the hallway toward his office. She'd had the nerve to try sneaking into the chemical plant he supervised, probably to do some destructive mischief or thieving. Somehow she'd made it past the fence before attempting to tiptoe by the bench where he took his smoke break every day at five. He'd recognized her immediately and seized her. Petty crime was clearly not her forte.

The question remained whether apprehending Jolie Benoit, daughter of media baron Reginald Benoit, one of the world's most powerful men, would be an annoyance...or a coup.

Jolie trembled, eyes darting fearfully about. Grant kept a firm hold on her elbow as he marched her down cement walkways deep into the inner reaches of the plant. She was a beautiful thing, just a few years into her twenties with a figure that was more than easy on the eyes.

He cleared his throat and pulled his gaze back up where it belonged. "A soft girl like you doesn't belong in a harsh place like this. I recommend you leave the larceny to the more seasoned criminals in that rabble you've aligned with." Though born into the good life, Jolie had deserted her family to dance in a burlesque company and hang out with anarchists. If Reginald was less of a pompous ass, Grant might feel sorry for him. But as Reginald was not merely an ass but a power-mongering bull, he didn't feel the least twinge.

Jolie's voice quivered as she asked, "Where are you taking me?"

He couldn't help another glance at the red lace and lush curves revealed by the deep V of her blouse. Of all the things to wear for breaking and entering."To my office, dear." Where he would be alone with Reginald Benoit's daughter.

Come to think of it, having her here was definitely a coup.

He unlocked and opened the door to his private sanctum in the heart of the plant and escorted her inside. "Sit."

She rubbed nervous hands on her jeans and sat in one of the plush chairs by his desk, head bowed as she peered about the room like a trapped rabbit. But there were no exits, other than the one he stood in front of.

"Don't think about trying something. We've passed enough locks even that scarred brute hiding from the law with you people couldn't get in here."

Her head jerked up with more force than he expected from her demeanor. "A couple of locks wouldn't stop Hauk from finding me."

Was that pride in her voice? Grant crossed his arms and frowned. "A beast who murdered seven of his fellow soldiers before going AWOL and joining up with anarchists? I don't think loyalty is his strong suit." Although rumor had it the felon had taken a particular interest in the redhead. Not that Grant could blame him. As far as Jolie had fallen, though, it still surprised him that she might reciprocate the feeling. Burned from head to foot in a fire of his own causing, ex-Staff Sergeant Wesley Haukon was not only vicious but frighteningly hideous.

Her gaze sank to the floor, and she shifted uncomfortably. Ah. Her words were nothing but bluster. He should've known.

She meekly submitted to a pat-down, a not altogether unpleasant experience on his part. Her pockets held a phone, a tube of lipstick and a set of car keys. The girl had tried to break into his plant without a single weapon. He set her belongings on his desk and turned back to her.

"What are you going to do with me?" Big green eyes peered up at him, pleading, and he couldn't quite tamp the surge of lust her utter helplessness inspired.

I loved the entire story but I so don't want it to end! I've fallen in love with Hauk and Jolie and I'm just not ready to let them go.

In this installment of the series, people from the Underlight are being injected with this potion that will make them not only attack their friends and family but give up the Underlights location to the Order. When Jolie's father offers to have a plane sent to her to pick her and whoever else up for a birthday getaway, she's clued in that the Order have planned something huge, which is why her father is trying to get her out of there. Her and Hauk only have a little time left to try and figure out a way to save the Underlight before Jolie's birthday.

Jolie and Hauk are hotter than ever in this story. They finally start their relationship. With all of the scarring and deformities that Hauk has, he's still uncomfortable when it comes to being naked. They have some rocky patches while they try to find a way to be together without putting Hauk into a panic attack but boy do they manage.

"Calmer now, he could admit a big part of his problem was that if he had made a checklist of everything he could possibly want in a woman, she'd fulfill every one. He tapped his metal leg against the metal of the railing. Being so incomplete in front of that perfection was hard."

Not only was the romance amazing but the suspense and fighting was top notch. Jax doesn't take the easy route and give these two characters a tough fight and then a HEA either. Nope she goes above and beyond the HEA and gives us a heartbreaking moment that will leave you asking "What just happened?" She definitely did not disappoint on this one.

There could've been no better ending for Hauk and Jolie. Their story was mesmerizing, their personal growth was amazing and I'm really sad to have it all end.

I finally got the chance to read this and I'm so glad I did. Of the series, this book is the best by far. I love the magic elements, the use of his belief and Odin without bludgeoning us with it. I love how the hero is a scarred individual, like all of us are really, instead of the perfect one typically portrayed. I like how he comes to accept himself for who he is, which is always harder than getting a loved one to accept you. The trick at the end was superflous and irrelevant though I understand why it was done.

I highly recommend these series of books. They are well written and very entertaining.

An interesting serie which ended in a very nice way.
No need to have a prince charming to have a beautiful love story... A  beast also  works! In fact, Jolie is attracted to Hauk despite the scars and skin grafts. She is able to see beyond the surface. She is a really strong character who inspire respect.

This volume contains also some suspense with the final battle against the Order. I admit I would have love more explosions and more magic... As for the fighting scenes, the first volume is much more impressive.

On the other hand, the emotions are stronger. The characters are fighting for  acceptance, tolerance and the concept of beauty in general.

It is also instructif to see Hauk, so focused on the importance of appearance, when he manages to find his body. Believing he is ugly and unworthy of love, he choose his ultimate reward to Jolie without thinking of the pain of an empty life. For him, It was difficult to accept that his lover could care for him beyond the physical criteria.
Making a parallel with our own insecurities, its show the importance of a whole acceptance from the one we love.  It's what give us fuel to be confident...

I confess that I have not needed for the fairy tale and magic to make the end a very nice one. These ingredients are just a bonus ...

This is a great series full of action, supernatural, tolerance and love.

Ah the finale. The ending to the story! And finally Jolie and Hauk! Everything lead up to this and it was one wild, and somewhat confusing story, but one that I loved non-the-less. I had been waiting for two whole books for Hauk and Jolie to finally get their stuff together and be together, but that doesn’t stop Hauk from being self-conscious and feeling undeserving. There were some things that left me a little confused like the fact that the ‘bad guys’ weren’t entirely defeated, or that what happened to Hauk was never fully explained, instead it was like we just accepted that answer that ‘he did it and that was that. Then there was also my confusion about the fact that he walked out half naked in the first book (after taking a shower) and he is pretty self-conscious about his figure in this novel. However, there were so many other intimate moments between Jolie and Hauk that I couldn’t help but love their story. I’m not a big science fiction fan, but I was more than able to look past that. I loved the additional characters that were all vastly different. I also loved the Norse mythology that was mixed in there. But, above all it was Jolie and Hauk that won me over. The fact that they would do anything for each other and proved it made me giddy and weak all over.

    Good:

Haul/Wesley Haukon- Damaged more internally then externally, in my opinion. Loves Jolie and is willing to do anything for her except let her in. He is a guy any girl could fall for.

Jolie- Proves that The Underlight isn’t a Boys-Only Club and that she can keep up with the rest of them pretty easily. Wants everything that Hauk is offering and more.

    Bad:

Sometimes I don’t believe that two characters could mis-interpret each other to this extent. Even when one character tells the other something it’s like it was never said, or they couldn’t have possibly meant it that way. Makes no sense to me.

The science fiction part of this series was a little out of my zone, so sometimes I was a little bored or confused, or just found some stuff to be “filler”.

Overall (Writing style, story line, and general):

Overall the book was still enjoyable, but I do have the feeling I was reading it just to wrap it up, and to finally read about Jolie and Hauk being together and finally admitting their feelings. There was some room for improvement, but it was an enjoyable and adventurous read overall. I am happy that I took the plunge into the world of The Underlight.

Couldn't have thought of a better ending to this series. Jax Garren is an amazing writer, and I'm glad that I have the honor of knowing her. If she hadn't ended somewhat like how it did, I would have hunted her down and demanded a new ending. I did not want the story to end, but I suppose all good things must. Can't wait for the next book that Jax comes out with, because I'm sure it will be as exceptional as these were.

You could read this as a separate story, but I recommend that you go back and enjoy all of the time that Jolie Benoit and Wesley "Hauk" Haukon have together. Jolie helps Hauk see that even though he sees himself as an ugly beast due to his scars, she sees him as beautiful just the way he is and wouldn't change him, even when given the chance. While Jolie does this for Hauk, Hauk helps Jolie see that some people are worthy of her love and trust, even when all her life those words have been thrown around to try to control her. This is a truly beautiful modern tale of Beauty and the Beast.

Wesley Hauk and Jolie Benoit have been training together for quite a while now. Their friendship has grown deeper and Jolie desperately wants to share in physical affections, but Hauk is still haunted by his disfigurement.

The Order of the Ananke has been injecting members of the Underlight with an unknown substance. Unsure of what its effects will be, the Underlight is sure its nothing good. Jolie and Hauk take on insurmountable odds when they must enter the Ananke’s temple to uncover the secrets behind the serum and hopefully find a cure.

This was a fantastical installment in the Tales of the Underlight series. Hauk and Jolie’s relationship is still shaky with misunderstandings but it was fabulous watching them work through their issues. Lots of action, hot romance, exciting advancements in the series storyline, I really loved How Beauty Loved the Beast.

This copy of How Beauty Loved the Beast was given to me by Carina Press in exchange for a honest review. This book is set for publication on May 13, 2013.
