Little Mole poses the titular question and his papa suggests that he go find out. His friends answer his question in terms of their own worlds, gradually expanding the perspective from the little spider's answer, "My web is the world," to the great whale's reply, "I have swum in this ocean all my life, and I have never seen the end." Riding on the leviathan's back, Little Mole sees a great deal of the world and returns home to his own molehill, telling his papa that the world is "as big as you want it to be," as he snuggles down to sleep. The oversize pictures display large, bold animals, etc., in the style of Eric Carle or Leo Lionni, set against backgrounds of bright color and textured design. Although the story is slight, the book is handsomely produced and the large format makes it definitely a candidate for storytime.

When Little Mole asks the title question, Papa's reply is, "Why don't you go and find out?" Thus begins an odyssey. A spider, a mouse, a horse and a seagull help the Little Mole get to a whale, who really speeds up the process. Riding on the whale's massive back, Little Mole gets to see a vast desert, a tall city, huge mountains, wild jungles, thick forests and "many colorful creatures." Teckentrup uses her premise to display a vibrantly varied palette, as the whale takes the Little Mole from a red night sky that makes the ocean look black, through another pocked with silver stars and finally benign blue-green waters. Upon returning home, Little Mole learns that Papa has a wise answer to the question after all, one that should delight readers. Brisk, bright and packed with age-appropriate information. (Picture book. 2-6)

    Highly Recommended - Beautiful art and important lesson

    My son and I found this book at our local library and we fell in love with the simple and colorful artwork as well as the journey Little Mole's curiosity takes him on. It is a wonderful journey to answer the title's question and Little Mole's synopsis at the end is succinct and profound. I highly recommend this book to parents for young children (ages 0 - 10).

    The story is very suitable for educational purposes. Opens up a world for children to understand how certain animals' abilities contribute to their life and to the 'whole living world'. At the same time simply analizes the attributes of the elements of our natural world.
