Overview

Does your husband always seem to miss the point of what you're saying? Do you feel that your wife never listens when you're trying to say something important? Does your boyfriend have irritating habits that he refuses to change, despite the fact that you constantly ask him to? Do the two of you have the same old arguments over and over again? How Can I Get Through to You? offers a practical and effective method to help eliminate the problems that can trouble any relationship. In How Can I Get Through to You? professional communication expert D. Glenn Foster and Mary Marshall reveal an important breakthrough method for improving communication in relationships. This system was developed out of Foster's overwhelmingly successful interview technique, which is professionally regarded as one of the best methods of communicating, interacting with people, and getting them to reveal their essential nature. Through a system of 3R's - Read, Respond, and Reciprocate - Foster and Marshall teach us how to determine if a person is a Feeler, a Driver, an Analyzer, or an Elitist - the four pure personality styles that emerge clearly in stressful situations. Foster and Marshall teach us how to use these four styles to get to the heart of a person's being so that we can reach intense rapport. How Can I Get Through to You? will teach you how to identify your type and the type of the person you love, and will pinpoint the areas of stress that the two types cause together. You will learn how to read what people really mean by understanding the signals everyone gives off that reveal his or her true purpose, how the truth leaks out despite our attempts to cover it up, how specific moods affect each personality type and how to deal with them, how the "triggers" to our personality types determine how we act, and how to satisfy another person's deepest desires so that you can come to a mutual understanding. The essence of How Can I Get Through to You? is understanding not the way people

An internationally acclaimed interview master reveals proven techniques for achieving total communication with loved ones. The authors explain how a system of "Read, Respond, and Reciprocate" allows us to get to the heart of another person, the key to effective communication.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Former police officer Foster is now an interview consultant for the FBI, the U.S. State Department and the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. Here, writing with attorney Marshall, he presents the ``Foster Method,'' his innovative technique for effective communication. Through practice of the ``3 R's'' (read, respond, reciprocate), the authors show how to recognize four personality types--Feeler, Driver, Analyzer and Elitist--and how to ``get through'' to each. Also included is interesting--and sometimes frightening--information on reading physical cues. For example, claim the authors, someone with ``three whites of the eyes'' is almost always suffering from great stress; and, as with Pinocchio, rubbing or pulling the nose is a signal of dishonesty. Some will find this neat pigeonholing of people into four, basically negative ``types'' to be based on a grim view of humanity that does not allow for individual differences. First serial rights to Good Housekeeping; author tour. (June)
Library Journal
This is an eye-opening, accessible, and informative book on augmenting family communication. Foster, a former polygraph examiner, and Marshall, a lawyer specializing in family law, draw upon the now-classic works of Desmond Morris, Edward Hall, Carl Jung, Elizabeth Kbler-Ross, Katherine Briggs, and Isabel Briggs Myers. Successfully synthesizing these sources, the authors demonstrate how one can identify differences in order to foster better communication through their technique of read, respond, and reciprocate. Recommended for self-help collections on marriage and family enrichment.-Scott Johnson, Meridian Community Coll. Lib., Miss.
