All Music Guide - Marisa Brown
Despite her many abilities as chef, traveler, and television talk show host, Rachael Ray is in fact not singing or playing any sort of musical instrument on How Cool Is That Christmas. Rather, the album is a collection of her favorite Christmas songs, most of which fall into the "modern traditional" category "Winter Wonderland," "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" and are performed by older, classic artists like Billie Holiday, Doris Day, Elvis Presley, and Willie Nelson, though young jazz singer Jane Monheit is also present with the scatty "The Man with the Bag." And though all of the songs are in English, Ray pays tribute to her heritage that and her recipe for ...

And though all of the songs are in English, Ray pays tribute to her heritage that and her recipe for Christmas pasta with a song about "Dominick the Italian Christmas donkey" by Lou Monte. She chooses Sinatra's version of "White Christmas" over the more famous one by Bing Crosby although the late singer is featured in his duet with David Bowie on "Little Drummer Boy/Peace on Earth," which is generally titled "Peace on Earth/Little Drummer Boy" and a smooth jazzy cover of "Auld Lang Syne" by Argentine sax player Gato Barbieri. The most consistent factor in the album besides the holiday -- but not religious -- theme is the overall good-naturedness of the songs, which are bright and upbeat, much like how Ray presents herself, and which means that How Cool Is That Christmas is a lot of fun, and at just over 30 minutes long, very much fits the schedule that Ray and her audience have. Hey, you could probably make a meal along with it.

    RayRay Gets My Vote

I don't know why online reviewers would attack Rachael's right to make a holiday cd. It's as time tested a tradition as, well, the commercialized holiday itself. I mean, Martha Stewart had holiday cds. Retail chains issue their own samplers. South Park did a xmas album, charities do xmas compiliations. I defend anyone's write to make what is essentially a mixtape: from Dick Cheney to Maury Povitch, from Judge Judy to Ted Kennedy, from Emeril to a bunch of haters... God Bless us all! P.S. This is a pretty darn tasty collection of holiday songs by some of the best... ever.

    Rachael vs. Martha

If you stopped hating on RR for a minute and took a look at the disc, you'd find a much hipper collection than similar titles from non-experts such as Martha Stewart. Willie Nelson, Gato Barbieri, Aretha? What's wrong with you people?

    Why?

    1. Compilations are an easy way for ANYONE to make a quick buck. 2. It is not an insult to call RR a cook, it is IN FACT what she calls herself. 3. Hasn't Martha invaded every aspect of your lives already? I believe she even has a line of HOMES made to look like her estates. Can we say quick buck there??? 4. Listen to your Mother, if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all!

    Christmas is Ruined

What makes a mediocre cook an expert in Cool songs for Christmas?

    Just plain sad!

I find it truly hard to believe that this no talent hack of a cook has the nerve to market a Christmas music compilation. I think she should spend more time learning how to actually cook food that's healthy and edible instead of slapping her name on anything for a quick buck. Its bad enough someone gave her a talkshow on network T.V. but now she's going to ruin Christmas classics by associating her name with them! Hopefully her 15 minutes of fame is quickly comming to an end. What a total tool!
