How Did They Do That? Career Highlights, Triumphs and Challenges

How Did They Do That? Career Highlights, Triumphs and Challenges is a great resource as well as an encouragement for the reader. It clearly dispels the misconception that luck plays into success. It also shows how faith coupled with hard work can make dreams achievable. Each featured person has a story, words of wisdom and a call to act. The What Can You Do Now section helps the reader to move forward in that particular career by giving practical advice and steps toward achieving that goal. In addition, there is space provided for the reader to make notes about each person’s story. There are 12 featured people who work in areas from Actor to Military Soldier. The stories are not lengthy but are packed full of great information. One of the best aspects of this book is that it is not filled with conceited, self-praise or media sensationalism from each presenter. Rather, it displays honest storytelling and real life experiences. Each person tells about their trials and victories in pursuing their passion. This is a great book for middle school through college aged people. A great read all the way around. I received this book from the Book Club Network in exchange for my honest opinion.

Not really my “cup of tea.” While How Did They Do It? was very well written, I didn’t particularly enjoy it. It has 4 stars in spite of that because it was very well done and I believe it to be a good resource for anyone interested in any of the professions listed. I may have liked it better had I known who any of the people she profiled were and if I were interested in pursuing one of those professions. I did enjoy reading about each person’s journey in their own words. There is a brief overview of what they have accomplished, then you get to read about it from their perspective - what they think was the main determining factor in their path, how faith in God guided them, their “Words of Wisdom,” and any advice they have for those considering a similar vocation.
I received this book through The Book Club Network for my honest review, which I have given.

I am wired to be an achiever. And, I enjoy the opportunity to learn from others who have achieved significant milestones in their lives. If you’re like me, you’ve admired others who have achieved tremendous success and wondered what it would be like to ask them the milestones of their journey and the keys to their success. Well, wonder no longer—at least for the twelve individuals profiled by author Deborah T. Johnson. Across twelve different industries from entertainment to politics, we get a fascinating window into the lives of renowned figures like former Governor Douglas Wilder, actor Blair Underwood, and coach Herman Boone (the real life story behind Denzel Washington’s much acclaimed movie “Remember the Titans). I was enriched because not only did I get a glimpse into the lives of several celebrities that I have admired but I soaked up the specific life and career suggestions that they each offer with such humility and grace. As if that wasn’t enough, I was blessed to understand that behind each story is a faith journey. The faith experience is unique to each of us. But, we can see a thread throughout the book of how faith galvanized each of them to overcome adversity, to stay hopeful, to be forgiven, and to pursue excellence.  In my busy schedule, I absolutely love finding book gems that dispense words of wisdom in a concise package that is easily read in a few sittings.  This page turner is definitely a nice addition to the collection of achievers like me, are curious to famous success stories, or just seek timely inspiration. Thanks to the “How did they do that?” author for this treat.
