Children's Literature - Kristin Harris
The "Growing up Wild" series is an informative look at animals on two reading levels; one level for those learning to read and the second level for those reading to learn. The series is full of facts about animal athletic feats, how animals stay safe, and how animals keep clean. This volume focuses on baby animals. All animals have babies, but they live and grow in many different ways. Some babies stay with their mothers for years, while some are on their own from the very beginning. Each animal baby is identified and shown with a parent. The most startling image is a crocodile egg in a mother's mouth. The mother is using her teeth to help the baby crack its egg. The more advanced level text explains that the mother carries her babies to the water and watches over them for two months. Twelve animals are featured in very cute photographs that show them being cared for by a parent in their natural habitat. Supplemental material includes a list of websites, a glossary, and suggested reading. Reviewer: Kristin Harris
