Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Carol Ann Lloyd-Stanger
Children love reading about animals (as the cover promises). Without being overly alarmist, this little volume describes various ways animals use their coloring, their environment, and their wits to disguise themselves and fool would-be predators. Sloths have fur that looks like tree bark and move very slowly so they can hide in trees. The adult jawfish keeps his eggs in his mouth to keep them safe. When he eats, he hides the eggs, then goes back to retrieve them when he's finished. The hermit crab relies on others; he finds a shell to hide in when threatened. As he grows, he needs to find larger and larger shells. One of the most surprising methods of staying safe belongs to the doves: they play dead, completely still with their feet in the air, until danger passes. Colorful photographs show the animals when they are safe and when they are in danger so readers can see the changes they make. The book also includes a glossary, an index, and a list of books and websites where readers can learn more. Reviewer: Carol Ann Lloyd-Stanger
