Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Barbara Wheatley
The amazing and often misunderstood mammal, the bat, and how their sensory system helps them fly in the dark is the topic of this book in the "Tell Me Why, Tell Me How" series. Stewart uses the common bird to compare and contrast the qualities of bats throughout the book, giving the reader a frame of reference for the new knowledge. The microbat and the megabat are the two main types of bats with the size of their eyes, ears, and body making the greatest differences between the two groups. Microbats use the sensory system of echolocation to find food and fly safely. These echolocation sounds are sent out using their mouths or noses and usually are out of human hearing range. The wings of a bat are lightweight and flexible and by moving its long, thin fingers slightly, the bat can control how it flies. Readers are challenged with a "Now I Know!" box in each chapter that poses a question relevant to the section and provides an answer. An activity is included for the reader to try to learn how bats sense their world through echoes. A glossary, reference page, and an index finish out the informational book. This would be an excellent resource for elementary science classes and any child interested in the remarkable mammal, the bat. Reviewer: Barbara Wheatley
