Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Remy Dou
Explaining how jets get off the ground presents a daunting challenge, especially when doing so in a way that little ones can understand. Jets come in all varieties but share the same basic components. The "Lightning Bolt Books: How Flight Works" series introduces young readers to these buses of the sky, depicting how their parts contribute to flight. Author Silverman crafts easy-to-read text in a manner that clearly explains the physics of flight. Jet engines pull air in, mix it with ignited fuel, and shoot it out the rear, propelling the craft forward. The forward motion causes wind to move over the wings, and their shape helps create lift. Although covering a lot of content, the narrative avoids monotony. Sharp, colorful photographs illustrate main ideas, despite a few minor inaccuracies not common to the series. Asides from an index and glossary, a "Further Reading" section includes links to other great resources. This installation serves as a good resource to keep young readers learning about flight. Other books in the series include How Do Hot Air Balloons Work? and How Do Hang Gliders Work? Reviewer: Remy Dou
