Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
One does not usually think of lions as among the most loving and cuddly of animals, but the cover shows a male lion and his cub rubbing cheeks. I am not sure how close to reality that might be since it is usually the mother lion that raises the cub and does most of the hunting for the pride. Several other animals depicted in this board book seem to fit the message a bit better. The swans who mate for life have their long neck arranged to create a heart shape, the peacock spreads its tail feathers to attract a female, elephants entwine their trunks, and wolves howl. The inside of the book shows a female lion with her cubs which is a bit more realistic. Mourning doves are shown billing and cooing, although they tend to have more of a plaintive sound which is probably how they got their name. Useful to introduce animals to young toddlers.
