Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - RevaBeth Russell
No, you really won't learn how your braces work, or at least not in the detail I would have wanted at that age. You will read that braces press on the teeth over a long period of time so the teeth grow straighter and fit together better. Special care is needed if you do wear braces. Also, your braces should not hurt and if they do you need to back to the orthodontist. Good to know. There is nothing about bone development or cellular restructuring or how braces will work on an adult. As a book about teeth, however, it does an admirable job. Teeth are used for more than chewing; we also use them for talking by pressing our tongue against them. The parts of the teeth are listed with each part's function. Enamel is the hardest substance in the body and it covers another hard layer, the dentin. Further inside is the pulp which contains the blood vessels and nerves. Sugar left behind from eating feeds bacteria which will produce acid, which weakens the enamel. Dental plaque can build up and harm the teeth and gums so one needs to have a dental hygienist clean your teeth twice a year. This book should be in dental offices. Part of the "Inside My Body" series. Reviewer: RevaBeth Russell
