Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marita Richards and Marilyn Courtot
The premise for this lovely book is how animals sleep. Simple oil illustrations depict various animals in their natural habitats. On double-page spreads in poetic rhyme, the animals are also shown sleeping or resting. This is a perfect bedtime story, as the soft, gentle rhyming text will coax the listener to follow the action of the animals as well as the young children at the end of the book. The Library of Congress cataloging in publication classifies this book as a nonfiction title, but the factual information is minimal. It could easily serve as an introduction to the world of animals for a very young child or just as a soothing bedtime read to wind down the day. Originally produced as a picture book, the text and pictures have been transformed into a handsome board book. Reviewer: Marita Richards and Marilyn Courtot
School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 1-A rhyming text describes the sleeping habits of seven creatures ranging from birds to bears to human siblings. This book shares the topic and format of Mem Fox's Time for Bed (Harcourt, 1993) and Nancy Tafuri's I Love You, Little One (Scholastic, 1997), and while its fact-based tone is warm and gentle, it does not ooze the unconditional love found in those predecessors. The simple rhymes are natural rather than forced, and sometimes vary in meter, but are more informational than lyrical. Kest's beautiful oil paintings feature large, realistic images that work well with a group as well as for one-on-one sharing. Use this title to balance Ian Whybrow's The Noisy Way to Bed (2004) and Jane Yolen's How Do Dinosaurs Say Good Night? (2000, both Scholastic) for a bedtime storyhour.-Laura Scott, Farmington Community Library, MI Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
Destined to become a classic, this is sure to send generations of children sweetly off to bed. In a question-and-answer format, familiar farm and forest animals tell readers how they go to sleep. "Little bird, little bird, in your nest, / how do you like to get your rest? / I gather some twigs, / and branches and leaves, / and snuggle, snuggle down / in the cool, cool breeze." The rhythm and rhyme are reminiscent of Bill Martin Jr.'s Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See, and are sure to be a hit with the very youngest of listeners. Gorgeously detailed and realistic illustrations add to the charm. Elements that pop out of the artwork and curve around the text make the reader a part of the scene. A lovely addition to the genre. (Picture book. 9 months-6)
