Laying the Foundations for Healthy Sexuality An Age-Appropriate Resource for Ages 6 to 9

Children's curiosity often prompts them to ask questions you, as a parent, don't feel ready or able to answer. But it doesn't have to be that way. Dr. Jim Burns, family expert and award-winning author, offers a valuable resource for those uncomfortable--even dreaded--conversations.

With biblical, age-appropriate information and illustrations, How God Makes Babies introduces children ages 6 to 9 to the basics of human sexuality. Answering the question of where babies come from, it also emphasizes how children are a part of God's wonderful plan for families.

By reading this book together, you are giving your children the tools they will need throughout their lives to make God-honoring decisions about their bodies, their self-image, and their relationships. Don't wait until it's too late. A life of purity can begin today.

Editorial Reviews

5MinutesforBooks.com
Jim Burns's new Pure Foundations books help parents present difficult topics in a straightforward, kid-friendly way. The photographs of children and families are visually appealing, and the writing is direct, but age appropriate and warm at the same time.
Children's Literature
Expecting a new baby is an exciting time. The first picture shows a little boy kissing his mother's very pregnant belly. "A husband and wife show their love for each other in many ways." They cuddle and get close. "One of God's great ideas for a husband and wife was to make a way for them to join their bodies together…It's called making love or having sex." A girl is born with a vagina and a womb. An inset shows a diagram of ovary, fallopian tube, womb, and vagina. For boys an inset shows a diagram of a penis, testicles, and scrotum. "These special parts… are also called private parts. When something is private, it is not meant to be shared with other people." Exceptions are doctor or parents (as when they give a bath). An egg and sperm must come together to make a baby. This happens when: "The husband puts his penis into the wife's vagina…Making love is a beautiful thing meant only for grown-ups who are married to each other." A picture shows an egg surrounded by sperm. Line drawings show the fetus at various stages. New babies need care. God has planned for families. Bible verses are quoted: Genesis 2:24a, Psalm 139:13-14a, and Jeremiah 1:5a. This is part of the "Pure Foundations" series. The author is a popular radio host. Parents and schools may find this helpful or too explicit. Reviewer: Carlee Hallman

A great resource for young families

I recently received "How God Makes Babies" by Jim Burns from Baker Publishing Group and loved this book! Having young children myself, this is definitely one that I will be using in our families educational repertoire. This book is all about laying the foundations for healthy sexuality and is geared towards children around 6-9 years of age. Of course, if your child were asking questions at a younger age, you may want to refer to sections in this book as needed.

I like this book for a number of reasons. First of all, it is the basics of sexuality with a christian twist. It emphasizes the value of marriage and only practising sex within the perimeters of it. It also designates a section about what private parts are, why they are private, and not to let anyone else touch you in any way there because it is not part of God's plan. Through reading a number of different children's books in this area, I was so impressed by this critical addition. In this day and age, childhood molestation is so common that I strongly believe it is a warning that cannot be left out.

I will leave you with an excerpt from the forward of this book,"Studies show that when children receive values-centered sex education at home, they are less likely to become sexually promiscuous and more likely to have a healthy view of their bodies and relationships... this book is meant to help you and your child develop a loving, trusting relationship where dialogue is the best teacher."

If you have young children who are or will be asking you these questions, then this is a book that promises not to disappoint. I highly recommend it!

Book Review of How God Makes Babies By: Jim Burns

I loved this book as well, it seems like the author has a whole series starting with young children going all they way through teenage years. This book is also illustrated beautifully and the pictures are awesome. The book offers the Christian perspective and is a great tool for teaching children about sex and babies. I think this is an easy way for parents of children to openly and honestly talk about sex, babies and their bodies. Sometimes I think it is never too early to start talking to a child about these very important things that may affect the rest of their lives. I would recommend this book to anyone with children or as a gift to a family member or friend with young children.

Is this right for your family?

How God Made Babies (for 6-9 year olds) is another book in the Pure Foundations series.

This book is similar to God Made Your Body but written with a little more detail for older children. It goes into detail about babies from conception through birth.

I enjoyed the photographs in this book as well. One part I liked was the discussion about "private parts" and the importance of not letting anyone touch those parts except for a doctor checkup or parents helping in a bath.

As in the other book, I felt all the wording/phrases weren't completely appropriate to share with those in the 6-9 year old age range. I've not had a child those ages yet but from my experiences as a teacher it seems like a pretty big age spread.

This is another book where I will let you decide for yourself if this is appropriate for your family and your children.
