Overview

This innovative *new format* includes a laugh-out-loud story and a toy dog that's as easy to make (from parts included in the book) as it is adorable.

Wilbur wants a dog. He really wants a dog. But Mom and Dad say "no," so he decides to build the dog he wants from the junk nobody needs. When Wilbur's done, a lunchbox, a radio, a soup can, a paint brush, and more come together to make the perfect pet--Rusty!

Using the easy-to-assemble sturdy parts included throughout the book, children can follow along with Wilbur and make their very own paper pet. Thanks to clever paper engineering, perforation, and pre-gluing, no tools are needed. Pages containing dog parts tear away so once children put Rusty together, the book remains intact.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
In a handful of titles, interactive elements add fun and whimsy. With punch-out parts on sturdy pages (plus instructions), readers can assemble their own canine companion-just like the resourceful boy who takes matters into his own hands when his parents refuse his requests for a dog in How I Built Rusty by Mark Shulman, illus. by Phillip Fickling. A preponderance of olive drab and tangerine give the proceedings a retro feel.

We found this book How I Built Rusty on a display in Barnes and Noble in Houston, Texas. I had never heard of the book but my son who is six wanted it the minute he saw it. He was so happy that he could read the book and like the little boy build the dog Rusty all at the same time. I thought it was a very clever book with a rhyming story which my son (Daniel, 6) asks me to read over and over all the time. I have never sent in a reveiw before but my son does not usually get so excited about a book like this. I would recommend How I Built Rusty and You Can Too to children from 4 to 8 probably and you can read it to them or they can try to read it themselves. The pictures are very cute and modern and old fashion at the same time. How interesting. Thank you.
