What does it take to go from unknown hopeful to published author?

Writing is a lonely occupation where rejection is the norm, and learning about the early hardships of today's best-selling authors can provide vital reassurance (and comic relief) to aspiring authors. These compelling stories of perseverance and publication will nurture your dreams until you succeed. Inside you'll find:

  • How more than eighty authors launched a successful career&#150in their own words. Many of these stories appear in this book for the very first time, while others are famous and have been passed down as literary legend.
  • Ten "absolute" rules to follow for publishing success, gleaned from an analysis of more than fifty "how to get published" books.
  • Inspiration and instruction that will help you realize your publishing dreams.

How I Got Published focuses on the scary and exciting time when writers are poised to jump before they discover if they can fly&#150the days when a writer has nothing but a manuscript or an idea or a story, and a desire to get it published.

Everybody loves a success story, and this book will leave you feeling energized and upbeat about finding your way. For resources, updates, and news visit: www.HowIGotPublished.com.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
According to one poll, 81 percent of adult Americans feel they have a book percolating inside them. But creating a finished manuscript is not an easy task for any first-time author, one reason that many heartfelt projects die on the vine. Editors Ray White and Duane Lindsay decided that the best way to assist fledgling writers was to query authors who had already been there. In How I Got Published, they picked the brains of writers including Stephen King, John Lescroart, Dave Barry, J. A. Jance, Stephen Coonts, Clive Cussler, Hallie Ephron, and Jerry B. Jenkins. A how-to-get-published tutorial from the top.

Meet the Author

Duane Lindsay is a published songwriter, a singer and cracker-jack guitar player who has performed professionally—the last effort being the Miami Book Fair with the Rock Bottom Remainders. It's this last connection that sets the stage for How I Got Published. Duane has the ability to reach an immense group of well-known authors.

Ray White is a Louis L'Amour type storyteller and an avid and eclectic reader. He's an entertaining public speaker who has taught classes and seminars on everything from writing to solar system design to tracking wounded bears through willow thickets.

Would be more compelling from a successful author!

I gave two of these books to friends who keep saying that they will write a book. However, even though I gave it to them, my "pre reading before gifting", revealed that none of the authors that this author cited were notable. If the goal is to self publish and maybe get a book in print for a small market, this might be the rudimentary supplement you need. However most people would rather read an authoritative account from Sidney Sheldon or Dan Brown on their secrets for success to get published AND make a living at it.

    OK for wannabe mystery writers

The book is advice from many published writers but mainly mystery writers, so not so relevant for other kinds of writing. Basic message is pretty redundant and unoriginal: be persistent. A few more original and useful tips are scattered throughout. Overall quite readable.

    I Also Recommend:

It is inspirational to know that some famous authors went through the same trials and tribulations as the rest of us.

After reading several entries, I came across a short snip-it of information about my favorite author. While I was researching several items from the book, I was led to other more valuable information, that has been bery instrumental in beginning my journey towards being published. As this was my beginning, it has become an invaluable resource for future endeavors. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to be a published author.

A book that isn't listed below, "How to Write a Great Query Letter" by Noah Lukeman can be downloaded online.
