Overview

With bold Southern humor, journalist and performer Kirk Read takes readers on a guided tour of his precocious and courageous adolescence. Recalling his years as an openly gay high school student, Read describes how he navigated the hallways with his sense of humor and dignity intact. He fondly recalls his initiations into sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll, as well as his "shy as neon" acts of rabble rousing during high school. How I Learned to Snap is a refreshingly victim-free story in which queer teenagers are creative, resilient, and ultimately heroic.

    I Also Recommend:

    loves it

This book was written in such a way that the reader can really connect and become a character. The writing was okay, but the character development Read uses progresses and reaches out to the reader. This book has become part of my growing up and coming of age process, and its message is integral in the creation of an accepting world.

I think it's important for adolescents to read contemporary coming-of-age books, and this book hits that nail on the head. I think anyon, with an open mind, can enjoy this literature--it truly is a work of art. Beautiful.

    boring

i'm not shallow, but i bought this book b/c the guy on the cover is cute...and i had just come out and needed help and guidance. well, the guy on the cover is not the author. when i saw a picture of the author i was disappointed and i concluded that he was writing the book to make himself feel better about himself and to make me, the reader, think he was some kind of smart ass stud. i did not like it at all. i came out, you came out, people come out everyday and i don't need to hear about how someone else came out and the struggles they went through and about their first sexual experience, unless they are a friend and need to vent. i found it to be self indulgent and it didn't help me. seriously, don't bother. read burroughs or kilmer-purcell or sallinger or carlip. this guy just made me blue.

    A Must-Read for any teenager

The book reveals a truely probable experience for any teenagers--Kirk allows his personal sexuality to be revealed not only to himself but also to the world around him, and is NOT ashamed when exposing his family and friends to the person he is.
