Seven years ago, Lord Gilbert met Lucy when she and her father trained him on working undercover to gather information. They fell in love and he vowed to marry her once he came back from the war. Neither anticipated the length of the conflict that finally is over. He searches for her as she has vanished, but once they re-meet their passion remains strong. However, her dark secret and his even darker remorse tears them apart.
This is an enjoyable second chance at love Regency romance that begins the moment the hero comes in from the cold. Filled with humor and pathos, fans will enjoy Gilbert's tale of meeting his countess as a spy student, but winning her hand proves much more difficult than her heart or learning advanced espionage techniques. Readers will appreciate Elizabeth Boyle's entertaining historical.

This was a good romance. The grandmother-in-law reminded me of my mother-in-law. Glad our hero ignored her like my husband did mine!

The field trainers are his daughters Lucy and Mariana Ellyson. Malcolm and Mariana hit it off, but the handsome and stiff earl doesn't make a good impression on madcap Lucy (and vice versa). At the urging of his brother and her sister to be open-minded, the two antagonists fall hard for each other during a challenging trial run. All too soon the men are off to the continent, but not before pledges are made by the two lovers. Seven years later heartbroken Lucy, scandalous widow with a 6-year old boy, is one of three notorious Lady Standons, and Justin is back, heartbroken and impoverished and looking for the Lady Standon to whom Malcolm left his worldly goods. Everyone - the three widows and the earl - is under pressure to marry when Lucy and Justin meet again. Buried feelings come to the surface as the two conspire to open the safe of a suspiciously wealthy (i.e., cheating) solicitor to prove that he kept the wills and stole the funds of all of Pymm's men. All other mistaken assumptions are straightened out as the book comes to a most satisfying end.

The scene where Felicity tells the three Stanton widows that they must live together is hysterical! And I loved it when Minerva, Elinor, and Lucy overcome their differences and band together (somewhat) to get what they want. The story of Lucy and Clifton is so romantic and exciting. I love how the author weaves familiar characters in and out of the story. I can't wait to read the stories of Elinor and Minerva!!!!
