Gr 1-4 A brown-skinned mother hides her son and daughter under the bed when soldiers come to their home in the night. Afterwards, the father declares that they must flee immediately, taking with them only the things they can carry. Their journey is difficult, and they encounter many obstacles before they finally sight land and are towed ashore by a boat. They have landed in America, it is Thanksgiving Day, and this band of refugees is safe and free at last. Bunting's simple tale focuses on the hardships of the journey and on the American ideals of freedom and safety. She wisely leaves aside the issues of politics in the homeland or in this country. Her prose is poetically spare, as her runaways move ``silently along the secret streets.'' Peck's richly colored crayon drawings yield added enjoyment each time they are perused. The mood changes from dark shades of desperation during the journey to the lighter tones of joy as the travelers at last find their refuge. Other titles on this subject that are equally valuable are Barbara Cohen's Molly's Pilgrim (1983) and Gooseberries to Oranges (1982, both Lothrop). Eve Bunting's evocative text (HM, 1988) is read by a female narrator against gentle background music and occasional sound effects. From a child's-eye point of view, it tells the moving story of people who are willing to give up everything, risk everything, for freedom. The accompanying paperback book allows listeners to read along and view Beth Peck's beautiful two-page colored pencil illustrations. This is an unusual Thanksgiving book that can be used at any time of the year.     Excellent Story!

    I used this book to convince my 6th grade students to question, connect and track their thinking while listening to this moving story. Eve Bunting, once again, knows how to make you feel for her characters.

    Modern Day Refugee Thanksgiving Story

    As a school librarian, I used this story for 2nd to 5th grade students as an alternative and modern day version of the story of the Pilgrims leaving England in hopes of improving their lives. Middle School students can also use the book as a basis of discussion on the reasons and difficulty of emigration and refugees.

    The story describes the difficulty of being a refugee on a small boat leaving for the United States. The writing provides many chances for discussion and reflection on why people leave their native countires to come to America.

    HOW MANY DAYS TO AMERICA?

    This story is about a poor family that moves to america. Because it was time for war to begin. They traveled in a boat many days, when they touch land, people reseved them and the people showed them thankgiving. I think other people read this book because it is a beautifull story and beautifull ilustrations, and the author really dig hard for this book to get publish. I also want to add that this book can really touch you heart and your feelings.

    I liked How Many Days to America beacause it wasn't a long, or boring book. I like the last part when the dad says that they are free and safe.
