Someone else has bought the dog for a very special son to thank him for all the nice things he has done. Who could that lucky boy be?

A story as irresistible as waggely tailed doggies and little boys.

Longing to buy a special puppy, a boy tries to earn the money he needs but ends up spending it on family members, who ultimately surprise him with a special gift. Includes music on the last page.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
It's a familiar tune, one that many of us may have sung in school, but it's doubtful that we know all 13 verses. The story in verse is delightful. It tells of a little boy who really wants the puppy he sees in a shop window, but he just doesn't have enough money to buy it. Even though he has a plan to earn the money, he ends up spending his savings on gifts for his family. Of course, when his birthday arrives, his gift is the little dog from the window. Trapani's art is warm and soft, just like the story, and the facial expressions tell it all.

PreS-Gr 3Patti Page made this song popular in the 1950s and now, with slightly different words and 13 verses for additional parental torment, it is surely destined for renewed life in kindergarten classrooms. In this jolly version, a little boy falls in love with a spotted puppy but doesn't have enough money to buy it. He sets to work to earn and save, but family needs (baby sister requiring the comfort of a yogurt cone, Mom's bee sting that only a chocolate bar will make better, Dad's allergies that require a box of tissues, etc.) put a hole in the piggy bank. When he finally goes back to the pet shop, the doggie is gone. It has been purchased for someone's very special son. Guess who. Trapani's watercolors are full of expressive detail, sweet without being saccharine. Another all's well that ends well tale.Ruth Semrau, formerly at Lovejoy School, Allen, TX
