Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Kids can count the creatures mounting mayhem in Bernard Lodge's How Scary! In the beginning, "one Growling Giant" chases a pair of frightened children. A turn of the page finds "two Dreadful Dragons" breathing down the giants' necks then "three Snapping Sharks" about to have the dragons for dinner. The last spread reveals a not-so-scary surprise. Children's Literature
Scary creatures become a counting tool in this unusual rendition of a counting book. It begins with one scary, growling giant and builds up to ten rattling robots. There are witches, dragons, sharks, snakes, vampires and other interesting creepy creatures throughout. The vibrant colors and expressive features of the creatures create a really frightening adventure page after page. The silly verses are fun and will bring a smile to the faces of those who hear them, as a bedtime story or during a story hour. Even those who are readers are likely to return again and again to relive the spooky adventure. At the end there is a special surprise on the last page. 2001, Houghton Mifflin, $15.00. Ages 3 to 6. PreS-Gr 1-One giant, two dragons, three sharks, and so on through witches, snakes, crocodiles, skeletons, aliens, and robots cavort across double-page spreads. The colorful cartoon illustrations are more amusing than frightening, making the book appropriate for the counting-book crowd, which isn't ready for seriously scary visions. Each subject has an alliterative adjective-cackling crocodiles, skinny skeletons, etc.-to provide a little wordplay among the numbers. The final spread reassures readers as all of the creatures are revealed to be toys. This mild-mannered fare may be handy for Halloween storytimes.-Jody McCoy, The Bush School, Seattle, WA Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
