Having made their name in Renaissance music and jazz, it's not altogether a given that the men of Chanticleer could let loose in Holy Ghost fervor. But, aided by Bishop Yvette Flunder, they do. Jennings' imaginative arranging interprets the skin-tight harmonizing of the gospel quartet for his 13-voice ensemble, and the results are explosive -- not the least on the opener, "Jesus Hits Like an Atom Bomb" and the storm of harmony that ensues on "Didn't It Rain." More predictably, Chanticleer's bell-like tones get right to the heart of classic spirituals such as "Motherless Child" and "Amazing Grace." Jennings' own "Be Still and Know That I'm God" closes the set on a reverent note.

This is beautiful music. Absolutely stunning. The clarity of the voices and the power of the soloist literally brought me to tears on one of the tracks. I heard one of these songs (Balm of Gilead) come up on my Pandora feed and I'm so glad I bought the rest of the disc. I feel warmed up from the inside.
