Overview

Long ago, when six suns blazed in the sky, a drought came to China. The heat of the six suns dried up the fields, so the emperor ordered an archer to shoot them out of the sky. The first five suns plunged into a pool of water. Terrified, the sixth sun fled into a cave. At first there was great rejoicing, but the people soon faced another dilemma. With no sun at all in the sky, how could their crops grow? The solution to their problem came from an unexpected source, an animal so humble and familiar that no one had considered his unique talents.

Amy Lowry Poole has eloquently retold this Miao folktale from Western China. Her exquisite paintings were created using traditional Chinese materials and techniques. Rich in symbolism and bold in color, they bring together elements of Western and Eastern cultures to tell a story with universal appeal.

In the early days of the world, when the sun refuses to come out for fear of a skillful archer's arrows, a small rooster saves the day by coaxing the sun out with his crowing.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
From the Miao people of western China comes a traditional pourquoi tale explaining that long ago, when there were not one but six suns in the sky, a drought caused a crisis. A clever archer figured out how to shoot down five of the suns, to the cheers of the people. When the sixth sun refused to come out of his refuge to shine, the villagers tried in vain to woo him out. But it was the call of the humble rooster that eventually enticed him to emerge. On the rooster's head the sun placed the red crown he wears today as he wakes the sun. Double-page scenes on textured rice paper contribute a properly exotic setting with simple human figures and symbol-covered clothing. Distant mountains are delicately drawn in transparent hues. Although there is nothing overtly Chinese in the illustrations (except for the sun symbols explained in the extensive author notes) they evoke an atmosphere of mystery and anticipation. The painting technique is also described in the notes.
Children's Literature
Long ago there were six blazing hot suns. When they relentlessly shone down on the crops and dried them up, the Emperor of China called his wise elders together. They decided to have the archers shoot the suns out of the sky. When they discovered it was too far, one archer determined that he could shoot his arrows into the pond and hit their reflections. Five suns disappeared into the water. The sixth fled from the sky into a cave and refused to come out until it heard the beautiful sound of the rooster. The sun placed a small red crown on rooster's head as a thank you. The author used two sources for this retelling of a famous Chinese folktale. With its blend of description and dialogue this version makes a fine read aloud. Poole studied scroll making in China and her work beautifully reflects it. She successfully used traditional materials and techniques to create the ink and gouache illustrations on rice paper for this picture book edition. They are full of symbolism, some of which is briefly explained at the end of the story.
School Library Journal
K-Gr 3-A Miao tale from western China, this beautiful book has been lovingly researched and artfully designed using traditional Chinese symbols, materials, and techniques. When the summer rains refuse to fall and six suns threaten to destroy the farmers' crops, Yao the emperor summons 10 wise elders to help save the harvest. They suggest that the suns be shot from the sky by skilled archers, but even the finest of them, Prince Haoyi, cannot reach the orbs with his arrows until he thinks to aim at their reflections instead. As five of the suns sink into a pond, the sixth flees to a cave and refuses to emerge until a humble rooster lures it back with a lovely "cockle doodle do," and is subsequently rewarded with a small red crown. A simple yet lyrical text perfectly complements the graceful ink-and-gouache earth-tone illustrations; together they reveal Poole's knowledge of and respect for Chinese art and culture while simultaneously exhibiting the beauty of her personal artistic style. An author's note explains the significance of the five symbols that are used to depict five of the six suns. A lovely addition to any folktale collection.-Teri Markson, Los Angeles Public Library Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
A great combination: a cryptically amusing, ancient Chinese tale retold with verve and respect for the original, accompanied by stunningly beautiful, transporting artwork.
