The Rules of Being a Proper Lady
1) Never take steps greater than six inches apart.
2) Never look boldly at a gentleman.
3) And never, ever, kiss a man who is not your fiancé.

But beautiful, bold Viola Carlyle doesn't care about the rules. And she desperately wants to kiss the notoriously tempting Captain Jin Seton, the man who brought her kicking and fighting back to English society. Kidnapped as a child, now she longs to return to that life of freedom where she was able to live—and love—as she wished.

Having hunted Viola for two years, Jin Seton has finally found his good luck—for, by finding Viola, his oldest, deepest debt will at last be paid. And although he has vowed not to let her win his heart, this very improper lady might finally be the one who tames him.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
A fiery female privateer meets her match on the high seas of the Regency era in Ashe’s uneven second Falcon Club romance (after When a Scot Loves a Lady). Kidnapped by her smuggler father as a small child, Viola Carlyle, as Violet la Vile, now commands an American privateer. When she sinks the ship of reformed pirate Jinan Seton, he inadvertently succeeds in his self-imposed mission: to locate the long-lost Viola and return her to her family in England. Viola’s reluctance to give up both her ship and her love affair with handsome planter Aidan Castle sets up both a clash of wills and an irresistible mutual attraction, even as Viola takes the first awkward steps toward reclaiming her noble birthright. Though the sheer unlikelihood of the scenario strains credulity and Ashe irritatingly undercuts both Viola’s competence and her maturity, seaborne adventure and sultry love scenes generally provide sufficient distraction. Totally Delicious! Great story, great characters, great romance.

I have really enjoyed Katharine Ashe's previous novels, but this one is the yummiest yet. I love the high seas setting, seeing a woman run her own ship - very differently from most captains, and how she and her presumed "rescuer" match wits. Plenty of steaminess, but to me that's not enough for a great read. Ashe has great plot, historical intrigue, and really fascinating characters to boot! Snap it up - great summer read.

One of my favorites but you should read "Rogue of the Sea" series first.  It's not necessary but this book continues some of the same characters.

I was a little disappointed in this story. I didn't really care

I was a little disappointed in this story. I didn't really care for Viola/Violet, preferring Jin, the hero. The first half of the book was much better than the latter half, which I though dragged a bit. But the writing was lovely as always. The story just didn't grab me as much as the first book in the Falcon Club series.

    Loved the main characters

Katharine Ashe writes with a deft assurance and always with interesting knowledge of the period. Her characters embody heroism, but with healthy doses of cynism and humor. Always a pleasure.

Give it 3.5 stars. The romance was good, but I thought the story was boring in parts. Not as good as Falcon Club 1. Liked how the character's in book 1 made it to this book. Loved the secondary character's too. Still a good read.

Loved it! I really like how Katharine Ashe manages to get a big, sweeping, swashbuckling pirate story, and a traditional Regency story in the same book. Amazing, hot, and lots of fun.

    Outstanding

Loved this book by Katharine Ashe. This is one in her Falcon club series and it was terrific. Tha main characters, Jin and Vi, are romantic, authentic and strong and they just sizzle as a couple. The story is wonderful and full of rich history, romance and intrigue. This pair has chemistry from the very first moment they meet. I highly recommend this historical romance, this gets 5 stars for sure!

HOW TO BE A PROPER LADY by Katharine Ashe is a wonderful historical romance. It is book #2 in the “A Falcon Club” novel series, but can be read as a stand alone. See,” When a Scot Loves a Lady”.For a wild ride with the Falcon Club members you must read “How To Be A Proper Lady”. Viola Carlyle is a lady of stature, loves adventure,a sea-faring captain, was kidnapped as a child by her sea-faring father, and doesn’t care for rules of society. Jin Seton, is on a mission to find the lovely Viola and bring her back to her loving family in England, even if he has to do it with her kicking and screaming. For he feels he owes his oldest friend a debt and intends to pay it in full. If he can only keep from falling in love with the adventurous, lovely, feisty Viola. A fast paced, action packed story of passion, desire, lust,a desire for a family, and love. “How To Be A Proper Lady” will capture your heart with its witty banter, engaging characters and did I mention it has a few twists and turns you will not see coming. A delightful, fun read! Ms. Ashe is a wonderful storyteller, who draws her readers into the story. Received for an honest review from the publisher.
