Many people have a desire to help their communities and make them safer. One way to do this is to become a police officer. Officers investigate crimes and make arrests. They also help people during emergencies. This article will tell you how to become a cop or police officer. The things you need to do to become a Police Officer vary depending on where you are trying to get a job. Most US states now have some form of "Police Officer Standards & Training" criteria. This is commonly abbreviated as POST.
1 Be a U.S. citizen or have naturalization papers. You may also be 21 years of age, depending on the location.
2 Go on at least 1 police ride-along to gain valuable job experience.
3 Obtain your high school degree or GED. This is the minimum amount of education you must have in order to become a law enforcement officer.
4 Inquire about further education and other requirements at the law enforcement office you wish to join. Some of these requirements vary from town to town even in the same state.
5 Get 60 semester hours or an associates degree in criminal justice or a related field, if required. In some places, the 60 hours does not have to be in a related field....
