Overview

"No matter where you are or who you are, there are four main things that you have to do if you want to make good friends and keep them.

You have to be HONEST
You have to be FAIR
You have to be STRONG
and you have to be WISE
And there is no good in trying to fool yourself. All that isn't so easy."

In a time when all the rules for raising children have been redefined dozens of times, here is a book for bewildered parents from a simpler time when we all agreed on what was right and what was wrong. First published in 1946, Munro Leaf's How To Behave And Why gives touchingly sincere yet gently funny lessons in Honesty, Fairness, Strength, and Wisdom. Originally intended for the very young, but with meaning for us all, How To Behave and Why is a true classic, charmingly illustrated with childlike drawings, and with a timeless message. It is a sure guide for teaching children (and adults) how to behave.

    Why behave?

This book is an instant hit with my 7 year old. How to Behave and Why clearly explains character development so anyone can understand. It challenges the reader/listener to be a better person and really understand what is at stake.

    Great Tool for Parents

I bought this book to read to my 6 year old. He was going through a period where he was being rude, talking back, and telling little lies. So I was looking for a book that would address these issues in a way that he would understand. I love the examples, the organization of the book and the way the topics encompass all the principles of good behavior. This book has helped my son a lot and we often refer to it when we need to remind him of the proper way to behave.

This is a simple, quickly read book of life for anyone. I gave a copy to each of my teenage children. A great reminder of what is really important in getting along with others in a complicated world.

How to Behave & Why- Wonderful book!!!

I really liked reading this book with my two older kids, 10 & 11. It teaches about being strong, wise, fair, and honest. We took each topic individually and read the section at bedtime. It lead to good discussions with them and got them to think about their actions.

I'm still trying to work it out for my younger ones. It's a bit long and not as interesting for them, but I think I'll still try it out on them and see how they react.

So far the book has been great. I like that it emphasizes that rules are for adults as well as children. And the four characteristics- honest, strong, fair, & wise- are easy concepts for them to understand and they can work on each of them individually to make themselves a better person.

A good one to read over and over again.

It has a lot of good points about being respectful and honest and then does a good job of explaining why it is important to behave. The only down side is that it was kind of long for younger readers. My five year old started to lose interest toward the end. The 2 year old was over it after about 10 pages. The illustrations were a little hard to interpret for the younger child. He kept asking what they were doing. Overall, it's a good book to have around and to read occasionally to remind your kids why it's a good thing to behave. I would recommend it to other parents.
