From The CriticsReviewer: Cathy L. Gresham, MD (University of Alabama School of Medicine)
Description: This book is a brief description of each of the approved specialties of the American Board of Medical Specialties, as well as emerging specialty areas. Integrated self-assessment tests for selection of a specialty as a career choice are also presented. Practice options and issues related to the National Residency Match Program (NRMP) are presented. In the section on workforce projections and the effect of managed care on career issues, the editor and contributors address concerns of students; they also acknowledge the unpredictability of organized medicine.
Purpose: This book represents a useful consolidation of information about choosing a medical specialty, including the reader's need to identify likes and dislikes in a general sense, which may aid in making a career choice.
Audience: Medical students are the primary audience.
Features: Similar information regarding medical specialties and self-assessment is presented in a different format in Pathway Evaluation Program for Medical Professionals: Specialty Profiles (Glaxo Wellcome, 1996), with over 2500 physician contributors who participated in the Glaxo Wellcome Medical Specialties Survey, as compared to the more than 350 contributors to this book. It should be noted however, that an earlier edition of this book is cited as a reference at the end of each specialty section in the Glaxo publication. Another resource with similar information is the MedCareers program developed by the Association of American Medical Colleges.
Assessment: The content is complementary to other available materials and resources for students considering these issues and/or participating in the NMRP, but should not be viewed as the only source of information to be utilized in this process. This edition contains new sections relevant to the changing climate in medicine, both with respect to managed care and the inclusion of the most recently approved medical specialty, medical genetics.
