Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: Robert M. Vanecko, MD (Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine)
Description: This book is a self-help guide for career selection among the many specialty fields in medicine.
Purpose: The book's goal is to briefly describe the current milieu and future trends within each medical specialty and to outline for the student an organized, methodical approach to career decision making.
Audience: In addition to the primary audience of medical students, others involved in the resident selection process, e.g., program directors or academic counselors, might find this interesting. The author suggests that it might also be of interest to college students contemplating medical school matriculation.
Features: The introductory chapters are intended to help students focus on individual personality traits, life situations, and perceptions that should be considered in the decision-making process. Chapters follow on each of the specialties recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialists. Pertinent information is provided about training requirements, prerequisites for board certification, manpower projections, and economic factors. A composite personality profile of the typical individualpracticing the speci alty is included. Suggestions on where to obtain additional information are provided. Each chapter concludes with an inventory enabling one to compare a self-assessment of his or her own values and characteristics with those of a summary profile of physicians currently practicing in the specialty. New to this edition is information on careers in addiction medicine, administrative medicine, adolescent medicine, geriatric medicine, sports medicine, and women's health .
Assessment: This should serve as a useful guide for the numerous students who are uncertain of what specialty is best for them and who are comforted by a structured approach to decision making. It should also prove interesting to those fortunate individuals who intuitively know where they are headed.
