Coaching youth baseball is tough. Not only do coaches have to teach kids the fundamental skills of the game, they also have to know how to select a team, how to run efficient practices, and how to deal with parents and umpires. Furthermore, they have to make sure the game is fun for all the kids on their team. Jeff Ourvan is an experienced youth baseball coach who has determined that what makes the experience of little league so special is the values it teaches. In How to Coach Youth Baseball So Every Kid Wins, he outlines a plan of action for youth coaches to follow that will enable them to field a team that plays together, plays well, and has lots of fun in the process.

A great effort, but not a book that will really help.  The basics of coaching the lower levels is reasonable, but many other items are off mark.  I applaud him for his passion, but what is lacking is the knowledge.  The catcher should not be on his knees when receiving a throw...and home plate points toward that backstop, not at the pitcher.  The Ripken's book is great, spend your time there.

Ourvan provides both the novice and experienced youth baseball coach with excellent advice, ranging from selecting players (including a behind-the-scenes look at the annual "draft" of players) and running practices to teaching catching, throwing, hitting and running (and much more); I found the book's knoweldgable but conversational tone to be a big plus. As importantly, Ourvan puts it into context and keeps sight of the bigger picture, explaining how all children -- from the least skilled to the most skilled -- can have a terrific experience. While the book is targeted at youth baseball coaches and managers, many parents would get a lot out of it as well. What a terrific book!
