    Enthusiastic Hairdresser Shares Wisdom

Like a painter with his canvas, many hair stylists view hair and the perfect cut as an art form. In How to Create the Perfect Cut, Shape, Color, and Perm for Any Hair Type, Cosmo Easterly explains how stylists can get the best results for themselves and their clients. After spending twenty-four years in the industry, specializing technique, and learning many key lessons, Easterly reveals his discoveries so that any stylist, be it novice or veteran, can gain new perspective.

The advice found within Easterly's book affirms his belief that hair matters; it's important. He recognizes that the client trusts the hairstylist, and that the stylist is ultimately changing the client's life-even if it is only for a few months. With a strong belief in personal responsibility, Easterly emphasizes the importance of creativity, reading hair, controlling your emotions, not working for tips, and to never, ever stop learning.

Easterly's book is a learning guide, complete with tools such as learning objectives, review questions, quizzes, a fantastic reference section complete with techniques and art forms, and of course, stunning photos. For the laymen, budding student, or stylist who's looking for fresh perspective, this book offers insight, positive reinforcement, and a new way to view hair.

    An enthusiast, artist, and expert

This book is written by an expert in his field and a true believer. Cosmo wants his readers to be passionate and creative about their work, and he kick starts a more artistic approach to the daily routines of hairdressing. He understands that every client has a one time or another had a bad hair cut or a frizzy perm, and wants his readers to find ways to give clients a more satisfying experience. This involves not only knowing the client but knowing yourself. He frequently draws comparisons with the artistry of great painting.
He spends a lot of time considering the ways to approach clients, to find out what they really want even when they don't know themselves, and while the writing still emphasizes the inspirational, he gives really practical suggestions for dealing with clients both good and bad. The focus of the book is more about imagination than technique, but he makes some fascinating comments about balance points - the shape of eyes, nose and lips that an artist uses as a starting point for his work. He waxes lyrical about perms, which is an eye-opener to those of us who remember a nasty smell, a painful process, and a frizzy result. In this section of the book he discusses technicalities that only a hairdresser will love - but that is who he is writing the book for.
There are review questions and quizzes at the end of each chapter, and at the end of the book a comprehensive reference section, together with step by step illustrations of two styles, showing before and after. Those of us not in the profession will be amazed to read about different cutting techniques (25 of them) and perming techniques (11 of them). Cosmo has succeeded in writing a book that is entertaining and instructive to read whether you are a hairdresser or not, and this is a real achievement.

How to Create the Perfect Cut,Shape, Color and Perm

Aimed at hairstylists and students of the profession, this book takes an in depth look at how to succeed on many different levels.

Each chapter begins with learning objectives and end with a review and quiz section. This provokes students to think about what they have read and helps with comprehension of the chapters.

The first half of the book explores personal growth within the profession as well as the client side of hairdressing. It challenges the reader to ask themselves, "Why did you choose to work in the beauty industry?" and "How do you make something more out of hair design?" The author also gives tips on setting personal goals as well as business goals. He also devotes a whole chapter to clients. He delves into how to keep clients coming back as well as how to deal with rude clients.

The second half of the book is dedicated to the technical aspect of hairdressing. One chapter is devoted to balance and how to create a cut that will looked balanced from all aspects, something that the author points out as very important if you want your client and everyone else to like the hairstyle. Next the author discusses the permanent wave, aka the perm. This includes detailed instructions, tips and tricks for different hair types and helpful illustrations of what the process looks like.

But don't look at this as just a how-to book on hairstyling. The most prominent theme is encouraging creativity and imagination. This book was easy and enjoyable to read.

I would recommend it to people entering the hairstyling profession and to seasoned professionals who want to improve their technical skills as well as their ability to work with and please clients.

    Review From a Nonprofessional

As someone who trims and colors her hair at home, I wanted something to actually teach me new tricks in perfecting my at 'home salon'. The book was very informative for me, but I am not a professional. I would be intrigued to see what a professional thinks of the book. I have pretty much taught myself how to be my own stylist, alot of trial and error, I feel like this book is great for anyone interested in learning more about hair, or a professional who want to brush up on some tips and tricks!

The only thing that bothered me was that I wish they went more in depth with treating curl pattern '4' hair (I have '3') for I understand that people who have that type of curl pattern often struggle to find a great stylist, and it would be great to find people who are trying to teach others how to provide for that part of the hair market. The truth is hardly any 'all around' books do so, so it's not a flaw... it just doesn't make it the exception.

One of the things I noticed was the detail and concentration on the permanent wave. Cosmo seems to really know their stuff in that department! I also highly enjoyed the quizzes! They were actually fun, is that possible? It made the reading interactive and reinforced what I learned. The author seems to really try to get you to tap into your creativity. All in all a good informative read.

Wow! Easterly will make you look at hair styling in a whole new way

In How to Create the Perfect Cut, Shape, Color, and Perm for Any Hair Type: Secrets and Techniques from a Master Stylist, Cosmo Easterly provides a crystal clear guide on how to successfully rise up to the top of the hair styling profession, while gaining and retaining better clients and enjoying a greater sense of creative satisfaction. This book is incredibly comprehensive, and goes well beyond the scope of a generic how-to styling guide. In a loving, yet unwavering tone, Easterly holds stylists to a very high standard, asking them to recognize themselves as artists whose work potentially has more of an impact on a client's life than any of the great masters whose work hangs in a museum. Cosmo offers what could be called holistic hair design. He masterfully teaches the reader to see hair styling as more than the combination of a stylist, a client, and some tools. He guides the reader through the entire creative process, sets a strong foundation of both hair styling and business management skills, and asks the stylist to be conscious of their personal goals and actions towards them. Then, like any great teacher, he is the stylist's biggest cheerleader in encouraging them to take his wisdom and playfully explore from there. Whether the reader is just beginning in the field, or is already established, Easterly has the experience and insight to take both their hair styling and their enjoyment of the profession to the next level.
