Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
The Barnes & Noble Review
If it’s possible, this book will make you even more obsessed with your iPod.

Guy Hart-Davis’s How to Do Everything with Your iPod & iTunes, Third Edition is perfectly named. It covers everything: from choosing the right iPod to slick music management, from hardware accessories to problem solving.

Of course, everything “music-related” is here: ripping and uploading tunes, optimizing quality vs. disk space, organizing music libraries, creating playlists, troubleshooting, buying music at the iTunes store...you name it. Hart-Davis also offers detailed coverage of non-music features such as contact lists, calendars, and the iPod's data-storage capabilities. But that’s just the beginning.

In this edition, Hart-Davis presents detailed coverage on using your iPod with (or as) your home stereo. (Tip: If you’re adding external speakers, they’ll sound better if you connect from a Dock’s line-out port, not your iPod’s headphone jack.) Hart-Davis shows how to use Apple’s AirPort Express to play music stored on your computer through your home stereo. He also compares four options for using your iPod in your car.

You’ll find coverage of all the latest hardware: nano, shuffle, photo, even that neglected stepchild, the Motorola ROKR. There’s plenty of “advanced” material, too: managing multiple iPods and computers; recovering music libraries; and using non-Apple software -- even Linux. Last but not least: three full chapters on troubleshooting, from batteries to iTunes.

One thing hasn’t changed: Guy Hart-Davis is as smooth a writer as ever. He’s fun to read -- and you’ll never have to read a Hart-Davis sentence twice to understand it! Bill Camarda, from the February 2006 Read Only
