Editorial Reviews

Stan Whisenhunt
"Andy Killion writes with humor and pathos about bailing on his cushy Morgan Stanley broker position to chase his lifelong dream of owning his own business.

Killion writes about owning and managing a boat yard in Southern California, but it could just as easily be about any number of other small businesses.

Numerous books have been written about business by college professors and other experts from the outside looking in. Killion's book is a rare look at the world of small

Meet the Author

Andy Killion is a 5th generation Californian. He is a graduate of the Santa Barbara City College Marine Diving Technology Program, The California Maritime Academy and the Dean Witter National Sales Training Program. He holds an unlimited tonnage U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Marine Officers License. He has worked since he was very young in all aspects of maritime jobs from cleaning the bottoms of boats, offshore salvage, Tug work in Alaska, oil tanker work, stock brokering and now small business. He has worn many hats.

Andy is President of Anchors Way Marine Centers, a boat yard management company. He lives in Ventura, CA with his wife Tina, son Jack and daughter Carly. He also has a family of fellow cohabitants of what he lovingly calls the greater Ventura and Channel Islands Reefs.

"I was rustling through some files my late mother had left me a few years ago when I happenstance upon a document written by my late grandfather “Mac” McCabe entitled “European Microwave Conference 1969.” It looked like a college writing assignment, cleanly bound in velum with title page and contents etc. He had written this report for his employer about his attendance at a multinational technology conference but decided to “garnish” if you will, the proceedings by discussing in very clear detail all of the famous and not so famous drinking pubs in London. It was at this point in my reading that I quickly realized from whom I had obtained the blarney.

I write pretty much every day. I need to.

In 2009 I began to organize my writings around the concept of creating a small business reader. This reader would be like a bible for small business owners, full of parables and anecdotes written in the first person by a business owner fighting in the trenches.
How to Fail in Business, while trying really hard is the result of these efforts.

I strongly believe that whether you are a small business owner , an office dweller considering jumping into the sea of small business, a customer of a small business or a student of business that you should get something out of it.

My one true goal was to prepare a reference for my children so that someday down the road they will be able to answer the inevitable question, ”What would Dad do?”

Real facts from a real small business owner

It doesn’t get any more real than this. Andy documented and shared the real life experience of a small business owner. I’ve know Andy since he purchase the Ventura location and while in California always used his yard and services. No mater what was going on behind the scenes the customer was always number one. I sympathize and share the pain with him in regard to the effort required to own and operate a small business. For many years I to was a small business owner in the harbor and know the time, energy and sacrifices it takes to even keep afloat at time. Hats off to Andy!! P.S. Sorry Andy, I didn’t get the joke:-)
