Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
Flower-fairy artist Cicely Mary Barker died in 1973, but her floral sprites have continued to flourish. This ethereally instructive book enables young garden watchers to spot these tiny winged creatures. The book's five spreads include three-dimensional pop-up images that magically open to reveal secret fairy abodes. The mythic atmosphere is enhanced by lift-the-flaps, maps, and other effects. But we won't spoil the grand surprise of the final spread.

HOW TO SPOT A TREE FAIRY

I have discovered, to my occasional discomfort, that the more mischievous treetop fairies find it amusing to rain acorns, nuts and berries down upon the heads of unsuspecting humans! My advice: keep your wits about you and wear a sturdy hat during woodland walks.

Use your ears as well as your eyes. On windy days the fairies love to perch at the end of branches, enjoying the sensation of the wind blowing all around them. If you listen carefully you might hear their tinkling laughs.

If you are walking by a tree, you may hear a sudden twittering of birds. This could be a warning signal to let the fairies know of your presence. Fairies do not like humans venturing too close to their homes, and their feathered friends know to alert them if we are nearby.

Treasured, wonderful, amazing pop up book.

I bought this book on a whim while my two year old daughter and I browsed the children's section of the local store. (Which, by "browsed", I mean I followed her as she dashed from one shelf to another, with the aplomb and attention span of, well, a two year old.) The book was a GREAT purchase.

She comes to me almost nightly, asking to read her "Fairy Book". I pull it down off the top shelf (where is must reside, since it IS a paper book with lots of three dimensional fairies and dangly foliage; as careful as she is, I'd hate to see its condition after an unsupervised read through). We sit on the couch for twenty minutes or so, perusing the miniature photo albums and jot pads attached on a few pages throughout, and she is delighted to turn each page and watch as colorful scenes arise and unfold before her. We peek into holes and lift leaves and flowers in search of the elusive flower fairies.

"How to Find Flower Fairies" is based on fairy artwork by Cicely Mary Barker, the late creator of a long series of Flower Fairy books, the first of which was published in 1923. The artwork is realistic while still very whimsical and colorful, and has a very classical feel to it. The book makes great use of three dimensions, with multiple layers concealing fairies and their hideaways. One of our favorite scenes is an old tree trunk, which has a door in a knothole that can be opened. Behind the door is a pair of fairy shoes hanging on a peg, next to a small hole. Through that hole - a layer behind - a small fairy peeks back.

Other pages have fairies hiding under leaves, which can only be seen when curious little fingers lift the leaves (gently!) to find them. Some fairies can only be seen from certain angles or sides of the display.

This book fills my daughter's little mind with awe and wonder... and fills my heart with happiness spending those precious moments with her.

A highly recommended purchase for a young one - or any fairy fan!

    I Also Recommend:

Enchanting book for any little girl with a love for fairies.

The Easter bunny brought this book for my daughters. I was amazed at the quality of this book. The easter bunny brought it with the book of poems. In one word the book is "magical.". As you turn through the book you are educated about the worlds of flower fairies. The fairies hide all around the popups in the book. Too cute! My girls request this book each night. I must confess it is one of my favorites as well.

This book will be treasured for years.

I went in to buy a gift for a friends toddler, he just loves Elmo. I found myself lost in the kids section. I came across pop up books and was amazed how detailed and realistic these pop up books have become. I was in awe when I notice this Flower Fairies book. I always loved Fairies and Pixie's. There I was at 50, wishing I was a kid so I can have one. Well guess what I was a kid again. Once I opened started reading and seeing the detailed die cut illustrations I just had to have it and now own. I bought an additional one for a friend x-mas gift. If your looking for a gift for a young girl (or those young at heart)who enjoys the magical adventures of Fairies and Pixes you must get them this book. It will be treasured for years. Finding and opening this book a few years later will put a smile on their face and warmth to the heart.
