Overview

Have you ever hidden something, and then forgotten where it was? Imagine if you buried a treasure, but couldn't find it when you went back to look. This has really happened!
Here is information about real treasure lost in all fifty states, and even some in Canada! Read and be amazed. You know what? This book could make you the richest person in the world.
AMAZING TRUE STORIES:

  • Coins and bits of treasure wash up on Florida beaches more often than anywhere else in the United States.
  • The Great Lakes are freshwater and are extremely cold. These water conditions help preserve sunken treasures better than warm saltwater oceans do.
  • In the United States alone there is $300 billion' worth of lost treasure waiting to be found!

Describes treasures that have been lost in each of the fifty states and in various locations in Canada.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Children's Literature
In this age of "Who Wants to be a Millionaire" and enormous lottery jackpots, the idea of actually working to find a treasure may seem outdated. However, the lure of a mysterious prize that could have unsavory origins is generally very appealing, especially to kids. The immediate impulse is to find your own state to see what treasure might be hidden there. In addition to the fifty states, there are four Canadian treasure sites included in this book, all with maps for eager treasure-hunters. The stories that explain the origins of each treasure are short and engaging. Web sites and treasure-hunting hints are provided. The award-winning Holes would be a good fiction companion for this entertaining book that will get your imagination going. 2000, Aladdin Paperbacks, Ages 8 to 12, $4.99. Reviewer: Carol Lynch

Gr 4-6-A trove of stories of lost or buried treasure, one for each state and four from Canada. Each selection includes a brief description of the loot (from Inca gold and buried mines to pirate booty and outlaw spoils) and its history as well as simple maps that indicate its general location. Helpful hints for treasure seekers stress the need to search for treasure legally and with permission. The book is packed full of the kinds of quirky details that middle graders love. The light and casual writing style is well suited to the topic and appealing to its audience, who will be more likely to browse the book than read it straight through.-Donna L.
