Do You Need Greater Self-Esteem–Or Something Else Entirely?

Western culture increasingly emphasizes the importance of self-love and self-esteem. Many of us believe we must “find” ourselves–and feel good about what we see–before we can experience significant spiritual growth. Focusing so much on ourselves, however, distracts us from pursuing the only source of true fulfillment. Do we, as God’s people, really need to love ourselves more? Or is there a wiser, biblical path that can lead us to joy that is not self-centered and fleeting, but God-focused and lasting?

Challenging the current fascination with self esteem, Leslie Vernick answers these questions and others that trip up Christians today. Offering surprising insights and practical helps that can make a real difference in your life, she shows how you can experience greater personal, relational, and spiritual growth while humbly adoring and glorifying your God.

Leslie does a wonderful job explaining how to find real joy and peace by living a selfless life. I have read many of her other books and this one lives up to her gold standard of writing. You won't be disappointed by reading this book.

¿Leslie Vernick has given another gift of truth. With clarity and focus, she zeroes in on the essential need to let go of self and surrender to God for true and sustained joy. Leslie uses real stories as well as facts to engage the intellect and the heart in the discovery that trusting God is the wisest step towards greater joy. Leslie¿s experience as a counselor and her life as a lover of God positions her to speak practically and with great wisdom. She challenges us to snuggle into the love of God for strength and refreshment, but then head out to share those gifts with others. Leslie is a REAL writer- Relevant, Empathetic, Action-oriented, and Love filled. This book is valuable for self-study, small group study, and church-wide study.¿

Leslie Vernick makes sense, because she applies the Bible to real life. Her discussion in chapter 4 of low self-esteem, for example, confronts the notion that we can't help our excessive self-consciousness, shame or self-hatred. She calls it what it is: sin. And then she provides guidance out of that spiritual morass. Prepare to spend thoughtful time in her book and profit from the personal applications at the end of each chapter.
