Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Colleen Harris
This book is so thorough that any teenager following the authors' advice should be able to obtain employment immediately. It follows a step-by-step approach from first thoughts about working to evaluating one's job performance and dealing with change and conflict. Topics such as filling out the application, preparing for the interview, and the interview itself are logically explained and sample forms, such as an I-9, a W-4, and an employment application are included. Chapters include specific resource lists of books, human resources, and electronic databases. The resources are up-to-date, annotated, and authoritative (compiled by a public librarian). The authors use a question and answer format to inform teens about interview questions, resumes, time management, and work etiquette. Quotes and examples from teens are used to illustrate the topics. Tight editing and a focused writing style make for easy reading and instant comprehension. What sets this book apart from adult job-seeking books is a list of jobs not available to teens followed by suggestions of appropriate jobs; a worksheet for planning available time, taking into consideration school and studying time and other activities; and sample resumes for applicants with no formal work experience. The challenge for librarians will be getting this book into the hands of teens. The cover art is boring and teens shy away from oversized paperbacks. The large size of the book is necessary due to the sample forms contained within, but it is thin and will get lost on the shelf. However, once it is in the readers' hands, the information and general layout of the contents should generate interest. Glossary. Index. Illus. Charts. Further Reading. VOYA Codes: 5Q 3P S (Hard to imagine it being any better written, Will appeal with pushing, Senior High-defined as grades 10 to 12).

    Very Helpful

This book was easy reading and useful. It helped me learn about what to talk about in an interview, how to fill out an application, and much more! I really liked it and i think that any teenager or younge adult should try reading this book.
